Position Summary:


Advances the NAM’s official policy positions on a range of energy and environmental issues through collaboration with member companies, the Administration, Congress, state and local policymakers, labor, ENGOs and other stakeholders.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes proposed energy and environmental regulations and legislation to determine potential impacts to NAM member companies; conducts policy background research in order to understand complex issues and demonstrate expertise with rapidly evolving and dynamic subject matters.


  • Confers with Congress and the Administration to educate officials and staff on manufacturers’ priorities and influences passage, defeat, or amendment of specific measures, or introduction of policies more favorable to NAM members’ interests.


  • Proactively engages with NAM member companies and responds to member companies’ requests, questions and concerns in a timely, accurate and professional manner.


  • Leads coalitions and/or task forces comprised of NAM members and other like-minded stakeholders. Contacts individuals and groups having similar interests in order to encourage them to contact legislators and present views.


  • Prepares Hill letters, testimony, formal agency comments, news releases, issue briefs, and talking points. Contributes to the association’s regular publications. Works with the NAM communications department to collaborate on strategies, respond to media inquiries, and executive level communications.


  • Plans and coordinates meetings, conferences and other communication forums between members and elected officials in developing NAM policy and allows officials to respond to NAM concerns; confers with Congress and/or other governmental regulatory agencies in developing policy positions.


  • Contacts regulatory agencies and testifies at public hearings, Congressional sessions and member involvement activities to enlist support for manufacturers’ interests.


  • Attends and represents local organizations at state and national association meetings.


  • Makes formal and informal presentations before a wide variety of audiences.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervisory responsibilities encompass shared administrative support.



  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four year college or university, with a law degree or advanced degree preferred;
  • Plus, approximately 5-15 years of association, agency, law firm and/or Hill experience;
  • Experience handling media inquiries and leading coalitions is helpful;
  • An in-depth understanding of the diverse energy and environmental challenges facing U.S. manufacturers;
  • Thorough knowledge of the public policy process and current contacts on Capitol Hill;
  • Excellent communications (oral and written) skills,
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Innovative problem solving and diplomatically openminded thinking;
  • Ability to work effectively in a goal and deadline driven environment.
