Through policy expertise and an outcome-driven philosophy, the organization strives to advance proactive solutions in the areas of education, energy, environment, government, health care, housing, racial justice and diversity, tax policies, technology, innovation, and transportation.

Position Summary:

The Leadership Group is seeking a candidate to serve as Director of Environmental Policy.  The position may be offered at a Sr. Director level based on specific experience and subject matter expertise. In this role, you will help the Leadership Group’s members and partners define the organization’s priorities and advance their interests in environmental policies, programs, events, and advocacy campaigns. The Leadership Group is a 501(c)(6) public policy trade association with representation from over 350 technology companies in Silicon Valley.

At this time, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all staff members in the San Francisco Bay Area are working from home offices exclusively.  Once the situation changes, this position will be based in the San Jose Office near downtown San Jose. Flexibility is available intermittently once restrictions are lifted.

 

Responsibilities include:

Member Relations

  • Meet with potential members, cultivate relationships with new members and deepen partnerships with existing members in policy, programs, and events.
  • Policy Committee Management
  • Serve as the lead staff person for the Leadership Group’s Environment Committee.
  • Broadly and deeply engage Leadership Group member companies in the work of the Committee.
  • Recommend appropriate policy positions by researching legislation and public policy issues affecting member companies, providing information regarding competing viewpoints, and recommending a position to policy committees.
  • Identify, and develop relationships with, employees and executives from Leadership Group member companies who will help champion deliverables in the Leadership Group’s work plan.
  • Organize regular meetings to keep members informed of contemporary environmental issues.  Develop meeting agendas in coordination with committee chairs.

Public Policy Advocacy

  • Occasionally travel to Sacramento and Washington DC to advocate for organizational priorities (once such travel is safe again).
  • Develop strong relationships and thought-leadership with partner organizations and legislative offices
  • Develop relationships with key policymakers to help keep them abreast of the Leadership Group’s policy priorities and positions.
  • Write letters and provide testimony on the Leadership Group’s positions to appropriate policymakers.  Coordinate letters and testimony from Leadership Group member companies and appropriate community groups and associations in support of the Leadership Group’s position.
  • Assist in developing a press strategy on policy and events. Draft and submit Letters to the Editor, Guest Op-eds, social media posts, and video content.

Fundraising and Grant Management

 

  • Fundraise from companies for annual, nationally recognized sustainability conferences for Fortune 100 tech industry members and contribute to content development for that conference.
  • Solicit grants from philanthropic foundations on Bay Area environmental issues and manage their implementation.

Other

 

  • Develop a collaborative working relationship with elected officials, partner nonprofit organizations, and local jurisdictions in Silicon Valley.
  • Public Speaking: secure buy-in for programs, policy from Board of Directors composed of Fortune 100 executives and startup CEOs; speak on behalf of the organization at state legislative hearings, press briefings, professional conferences.
  • Facilitation: direct meetings, roundtables, and workshops for industry executives, with elected and appointed officials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5-8 years’ direct experience working in public policy and politics on environmental issues.
  • Relationships with California/Bay Area lawmakers, appointed officials, and area business and non-profit executives.
  • Expertise in environmental policy and the ability to monitor and quickly learn about changing policy issues in climate change policy, corporate sustainability, water, and plastics/recycling.
