We are currently hiring a Director, Executive Communications to support our CEO, Ron Coughlin..  You will own all of his internal and external executive communications, work closely with an award-winning corporate communications team, as well as investor relations and external agency partners You will have an amazing opportunity to bring the Petco story to life through a multitude of high-profile channels as Petco continues to differentiate itself from competitors thanks to an innovative model, strong industry tailwinds, and the strength of the human/animal bond.

What you will get to do:

  • Create targeted executive communications for internal and external audiences, including media relations, short- and long-form written communications, presentations, video scripts, social posts, etc.
  • Play critical role providing messaging support and communications counsel. This includes measuring, evaluating and revising strategies, tactics and processes to continuously improve overall communications effectiveness
  • Support CEO, CFO, and IR with quarterly earnings and related public company communications related activities
  • Support Petco’s CEO at internal and external company events, including media opportunities, Town Halls, Store Leader Summit, investor conferences, etc.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of strong media relationships, and corporate social media channels, while also contributing to the Petco Newsroom with compelling, always-current news, information and features about the company, its philosophies and practices, and its involvement in the communities we serve.
  • Engage key internal and external stakeholders in efforts to create awareness and differentiation in an increasingly competitive and dynamic category
  • Build partnerships with a broad range of cross-functional stakeholders to develop, document and consistently execute protocols to guide external messaging and delivery. This position has a multimillion-dollar impact on the organization by influencing perceptions among internal and external audiences
  • Create amazing content roadmaps for our overall executive communications strategy to support key company initiatives and objectives

The successful candidate will:

  • Analyze Problems and Issues – Gather and analyze the most critical information needed to understand problems, make decisions that take into account broad company and customer implications, analyze critical issues, trends, and root causes, and identify the solutions that best address them, probe and look past symptoms to determine the underlying causes of problems and issues
  • Ensure Effective Communication – Listens carefully and attentively to others’ opinions and ideas, communicate information clearly, concisely, and professionally, tailor communication style and content to the audience, proactively share timely updates and information with relevant parties
  • Understand the basics of Corporate Finance, familiarity with quarterly earnings and related financial communications
  • Establish Trust – Follows through on commitments. Is honest and direct in dealing with people. Promotes a culture of respect for, commitment to, and compliance with Company values, beliefs, and standards. Ensures the protection of confidential information
  • Make Informed Judgments – Makes sound business decisions based on insight and analysis. Chooses the best alternative based on consideration of pros, cons, tradeoffs, timing, and available resources. Makes decisions that contribute to company performance. Makes timely decisions regarding problems/issues requiring immediate attention
  • Meet Customer Needs – Identify customer trends, expectations, and needs, ensure that feedback from customers is leveraged to identify improvement opportunities, and follow-up with customers to confirm problems are solved. You will continually search for ways to improve customer service (including the removal of barriers, and providing solutions)
  • Plan and Manage Execution — Develop realistic plans (e.g., action steps, timelines) to accomplish objectives, prioritize and balance time, actions, resources, and initiatives to ensure achievement of critical goals, hold him/herself and team accountable for outcomes (e.g., achieving goals and complying with policies and procedures), anticipate and remove obstacles, and redirect efforts to accelerate the work or improve quality


This position requires at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field; 10 years of relevant experience, ideally in both corporate and agency environments; impeccable verbal and written communications skills; exceptional leadership skills and characteristics; demonstrated ability to build and lead teams; unimpeachable integrity; demonstrated experience with various communications tools, media, strategies and tactics; an ability to work effectively in a fast-changing environment, at times with limited information or direction; and a collaborative mindset that presumes positive intent.  Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and similar programs are required.
