The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) was launched in 2011 by former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who serves as the Institute’s honorary founding chair, and Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia to examine and highlight the roles of women in fostering peace and security and growing economies worldwide.

 

Job Overview

 

The Director of External Affairs oversees and leads the development and production of all GIWPS publications and communications for the Institute; directs the Georgetown Ambassadors program, and works with members of the GU Ambassadors to promote women’s participation in peace and security, the economy, and political leadership; and manages and cultivates dozens of individual Institute donors. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Executive Director and Managing Director to develop and implement a communications and external affairs plan for GIWPS
  • Direct the Institute’s media engagement and promote the Institute’s original research and programming
  • Oversee the production of podcasts, videos, mass mailings, blog posts, web and social media content
  • Manage student advocacy and supervise the execution of an annual conference at Georgetown, which provides access to inspiring women peacebuilders from around the world
  • Engage donors in Impact Travel to foster international relationships with leaders globally

 

Work Interactions

 

Reporting to the GIWPS Executive Director, the Director of External Affairs supervises the Georgetown Ambassadors Program Associate and the Communications Associate, as well as several student workers; and interacts with all staff members on communications, social media, and events.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or closely related field – preference for Master’s degree
  • 6 to 8 years of relevant professional experience in communications and event management including publications, media outreach, website management, drafting press releases, leveraging social media for public relations, and editing blogs
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flipboard, Drupal, WordPress and other similar platforms
  • Demonstrated interest in gender issues and policy impact

 

Preferred qualifications

  • A passion for women’s empowerment
  • Familiarity on issues related to peace and security
