ABB’s Electrification business is a leading provider of a full range of protection, control and measurement solutions – enabling safer and smarter electricity flow from substation to the point of consumption. We deliver products and systems designed to connect, protect and control electrical systems, ensuring reliability, efficiency and safety for equipment and personnel.

The Communications and Public Affairs function is crucial to our success. They are responsible for creating clear and targeted messaging for employees, customers and stakeholders, while supporting strong brand positioning, facilitating positive media relations, and managing public affairs.

The role reports to Head of EL Communications, US. As a Director of External Communications, responsible for managing ABB’s brand reputation in the US, ABB’s largest market, by ensuring ABB’s identity is positioned strategically and the brand message is consistent, timely, and relevant. The person in this role will be responsible for elevating the image and reputation of ABB with compelling content and storytelling that resonates with key decisions makers, community leaders and customers in the US while aligning with ABB’s global messages. The director of external communications also serves as a manager for the public relations and provides PR guidance and support for key industry markets.

Your responsibilities
  • • Develop and implement an integrated media plan to advance ABB’s brand identity in the country that aligns with ABB’s strategy and messaging; broaden awareness of ABB’s market leadership and increase the visibility of its products and services across key stakeholder audiences in the US.
  • • Work closely with stakeholders to identify and develop compelling stories, pitches, briefing documents, etc. for the US market.
  • • Proactive engagement with national media, business media and key trade media.
  • • Support key leaders in the country with thought leadership content, media guidance and speaking opportunities.
  • • Lead a team and agency staff to ensure flawless execution of media relations plan including management of ABB’s social media outlets.
  • • Serve as the US representative on the global media relations team. Works with global team to create and manage announcements and campaigns, media strategy. Ensure global messages are “Americanized” for the US market.
  • • Provide direction and support to all media spokespersons in the US as needed. Ensure key leaders receive media and crisis communications training.
  • • Proven ability to lead and plan complex activities including but not limited to synthesizing market/product data from multiple businesses and developing compelling stories that support ABB’s key messages and strategy.
  • • Responsible for developing story lines that support the key ABB messages and resonate with US audiences.
  • • Serve as the lead spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that promote and/or impact ABB.
  • • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • • Plan, support, prepare and manage responses to positive and negative inquiries from externals sources – includes crisis and issue-related media and social media escalations and responses.
Your background
  • • Undergraduate degree or higher in communications, public relations, journalism, mass communication, or related area.
  • • Minimum of 10 years communication experience in a corporate or agency setting with strong story telling skills.
  • • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
  • • Experience managing agencies and staff.
  • • Long term established relationships with business media.
  • • Demonstrable experience handling corporate crisis communication on a national scale.
  • • Ability to create and nurture strong and sustainable relationships with general, business and key trade media Preferred.
  • • In-depth experience in proactive and reactive media relations and crisis management and developing campaigns, writing plans on positive and negative (including crisis) issues.
  • • Demonstrated ability to conduct external campaigns through digital channels (web, social, etc.)
  • • Comfortable engaging with wide range of communications channels and methods to effectively deliver the appropriate message.
  • • Deep experience and comfort with pitching, interviewing and independently managing media relations with regional and national media outlets.
  • • Ability to effectively interact and counsel senior management and internal/external constituencies with a high degree of professionalism. Comfortable coaching and interacting with executives from diverse backgrounds.
  • • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to get message across by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and nature of information.
  • • Strong news, feature and new media writing skills with good writing samples (references will be required for authentication) and superb oral communication skills.
  • • Strategic thinking, ability to connect the dots and create compelling stories for the US market.
  • • Creative, speech writing and similar experience.
  • • Existing knowledge of AP Style.
  • • Strong people management and teambuilding skills.
