The American Diabetes Association, the nation’s leading non-profit health organization providing diabetes research, information, and advocacy, is hiring for the position of Director, Federal Government Affairs. This position is the Association’s lobbyist for federal funding for diabetes research and programs, including funding for the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the Division of Diabetes Translation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Special Diabetes Program — providing critical day-to-day advocacy and strategy to help the Association achieve its federal legislative goals to increase federal funding for critical research and prevention programs to meet the growing burden of diabetes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as the lobbyist for ADA on Capitol Hill, with the Administration, and with appropriate federal agencies, including federal funding for diabetes research and programs as well as other important advocacy initiatives.
  • Consult with the Vice President, Federal Government Affairs, to ensure continuity of overall lobbying strategies and advocacy agenda.
  • Work closely with ADA volunteers and coalition partners to achieve federal legislative goals.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key Members of Congress and staff.
  • Identify emerging policy issues related to diabetes in coordination with the Vice President, Federal Government Affairs and policy department in order to develop appropriate position statements, responses, and overall legislative strategies.
  • Work closely with the grassroots and communications teams to promote ADA’s federal legislative priorities to ADA’s advocate network, to the general public, and to the media.
  • Represent the Association in coalitions pertaining to federal funding issues.
  • Draft testimony, letters, fact sheets, and other resources for use before Congress and relevant federal agencies.
  • Work to position the Association to obtain opportunities on Capitol Hill, including participation in Congressional hearings and issue briefings.
  • Provide input to assist the Vice President, Federal Government Affairs, in developing federal legislative agenda and strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of Capitol Hill or Federal Government Affairs experience.
  • Knowledge in health care issues and background in federal appropriations issues.
  • Strong familiarity with the legislative process.
  • Strong written and oral communication, negotiation, and time management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide creative and strategic solutions to legislative issues.
  • Experience working with voluntary health associations or other non-profit organizations a plus.

 

**Compensation Range: $80,000 – $87,000 DOE
