Director, Federal Government & Industry RelationsThe Director, Federal Government & Industry Relations position will lead federal affairs policy and coordinating our grassroots engagement at the federal level. In addition, this position will assist with the coordination of Land O’Lakes legislative activities and provide communication for those efforts. This position provides opportunities to participate in legislative meetings, trade association meetings/events, and lobbying on Capitol Hill. This role will be based in DC and report to the Vice President of Government Relations and have significant involvement with corporate headquarters staff, including Communications, Member Relations, Community Relations, Truterra, International Development and Legal. This FTE would help manage at least one summer intern and require some travel.

Position Purpose:

The Government Relations Director of Federal and Industry Relations will execute government relations strategies that advance our federal policy priorities. Reporting to the Vice President of Government Relations, this individual will manage staff, and work closely with the government relations and other internal teams. Duties include oversight and leadership of a federal affairs manager who will execute government relations strategies to advance policy priorities. Additional contributions will include collaboration and building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including federal government officials at all levels; representing Land O’Lakes, Inc. at external events and industry association events; managing our coalition, The American Connection Project Policy Coalition; and, supporting the team in development of policy in collaboration with internal stakeholders and our cooperative members.

Main responsibilities include:

POLICY ANALYSIS AND MONITORING: Continually monitor federal-level government policies and proposals, research and identify those issues that affect Land O’Lakes members or its businesses, coordinate, collaborate to develop issue positions for Land O’Lakes and its members, and recommend strategy and tactics to address those issues.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RELATIONS:  Assist in implementation of strategies and tactics to achieve a successful outcome on key issues, collaborate with industry associations, coordinate grassroots efforts for federal affairs activity.  Manage a federal affair staff that will monitor and track issues and execute strategies to advance our policy priorities.

GRASSROOTS:  Work with the government affairs team to support activities of the Policies & Resolutions Committee; work with the government affairs team to develop grassroots events and opportunities for our members and business leaders to support state and federal legislative priorities.

COMMUNICATIONS:  Communicate effectively to ensure management understands key policy developments and federal affairs activities to position the company; assist with both internal and external communications, report on the progress of legislative efforts and provide detailed briefing memos and outlines of key policy issues and in preparation for events and grassroots activities.

Required (Basic) Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts degree – public affairs, political science, journalism, communications or related field
  • 6 or more years of legislative or administrative government experience
  • Political campaign experience
  • Previous management experience
