The Position

The National Women’s Law Center (Law Center) seeks a Director of Federal Government Relations to help lead the Law Center’s federal government relations strategies. In particular, the Director of Federal Government Relations will play a pivotal role in helping advance the Law Center’s gender justice policies at the federal level, working across the Law Center to develop and implement a federal government relations strategy and liaising with federal lawmakers.

The Organization

The National Women’s Law Center fights for gender justice — in the courts, in public policy, and in our society — working across the issues that are central to the lives of women and girls. We use the law in all its forms to change culture and drive solutions to the gender inequity that shapes our society and to break down the barriers that harm all of us — especially those who face multiple forms of discrimination, including women of color, LGBTQ people, and low-income women and families.

The National Women’s Law Center Action Fund is a 501(c)4 affiliate of NWLC, aiming to drive progressive change in our policies and laws so that all women and girls can live, learn, and work with safety, dignity, and equality. Another affiliate, the National Women’s Fund LLC, houses and administers the Legal Network for Gender Equity and the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund.

Responsibilities

  • Spearhead strategies to expand the reach and impact of the Law Center’s gender justice work at the federal level, by building and maintaining relationships with congressional and executive branch staff;
  • Represents the Law Center in meetings and briefings with congressional and executive branch staff;
  • Secures and leads cross-Law Center meetings with federal lawmakers and their offices;Lead development of cross-Law Center materials to federal lawmakers, including letters stating cross-Center priorities, comment letters to agencies, and more;
  • Maintain close working relationships with key gender justice champions at the congressional and executive branch level;
  • Lead coordination and development of the Law Center’s position on cross-cutting policies closely related to the legislative process, such as legislative process reforms;
  • Advise on advocacy strategies undertaken by the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund;
  • Oversee tracking of federal government relations across the Law Center;
  • Advise on preparation of President and CEO’s briefings, testimonies, and other appearances before federal lawmakers and Administration officials; and
  • Work in close coordination with key Law Center staff, including those undertaking federal advocacy work and the Marketing and Communications Team, to provide advice, information, and support on federal legislation, policy, and strategy, and strategically and collectively further the Law Center’s work.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree or comparable experience;
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience;
  • Established relationships with federal lawmakers and/or their staff and Administration officials;
  • In-depth knowledge of legislative process and norms;
  • The ability to build trust and credibility with key federal lawmakers and/or their staff and Administration officials;
  • Experience staffing executives in their work with lawmakers and Administration officials and coaching colleagues in how to prepare executives for testimony and briefings;
  • Outstanding analytical, oral, and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Collaborative and collegial approach, and an ability and desire to work in a team-based environment, and an orientation to the work that recognizes and values the contributions of all team members; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working on gender and racial equity and centering communities of color in their approach to work.

Additional preferred skills and knowledge:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to progressive gender justice issues;
  • Knowledge of electoral campaign work or C4 advocacy strategies.

Key Relations

This position reports to the Vice President for Strategy and Policy and works closely with teams across the Law Center including the Marketing and Communications team and the Office of the President and CEO.

Compensation & Benefits

A minimum salary of $116,433 will be provided to the successful candidate who has at least 7 years of experience directly relevant to this role, consistent with the National Women’s Law Center’s compensation framework.

The Law Center offers a comprehensive benefits package, and four weeks of annual vacation.

NWLC is a non-profit organization whose headquarters and staff are based in Washington, D.C., with our office located in historic Dupont Circle. However, due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, all NWLC staff are temporarily working remotely. We continue to monitor public health guidance and keep safety, science, and flexibility top of mind as we evaluate what reopening looks like for our team.
