Empowered by our expansive grassroots network, Susan G. Komen’s Center for Public Policy is leading the fight for those impacted by breast cancer locally, in our states and in Washington, D.C. Komen’s Center for Public Policy works to identify, through a transparent and broad-based, intensive vetting and selection process, the advocacy issues that have the greatest potential impact on Komen’s mission.

The Director, Federal Policy & Advocacy will support and promote Komen’s public policy & advocacy initiatives related to breast cancer and public health policy within the federal government. This individual will plan, implement and coordinate federal legislative, budgetary and regulatory activities by representing the organization before Congress and the administration on issues prioritized by the Center for Public Policy.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Serves as subject matter expert and on the ground representative for public policy and advocacy efforts in the Washington, DC, working to advance Komen’s federal policy agenda through extensive contact with the U.S. Congress and the Administration.

Leads the development for federal advocacy strategies in support of Komen’s Public Policy and Advocacy Priorities.

Increases Komen’s visibility and presence on Capitol Hill and with the White House by identifying, developing and managing strategic relationships with key Members of Congress and their staff and staff of key executive branch agencies.

Develops relationships with population-specific caucuses, coalitions and working groups (i.e. Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Women’s Congressional Policy Institute)

Oversees regulatory engagement relating to issues impacting the breast cancer community.

Tracks, reviews, assesses and reports on legislation, budget and breast health programs in Congress.

Gathers intelligence and assists in the preparation of position papers, talking points, policy briefings, presentations and other materials related to federal policy and advocacy.

Develops, leads and/or participates in various coalitions and working groups that benefit Komen’s federal policy agenda and strategy.

Leads the planning, organizing and execution of advocate trainings and policy events in DC.

Develops external relationships and participate with federal policy coalitions, patient advocacy organizations, healthcare associations and industry partners to identify areas for collaboration.

Represents Komen’s Center for Public Policy externally with legislative offices, federal government, stakeholders, media, donors.

Promotes an organizational culture that values trust, commitment to the mission, scientific integrity and professional and organizational growth.

Minimum Experience Required:

Master’s degree in public policy, public administration, political science, government affairs, communications or other relevant field.

7-10 years of progressive professional experience in political, legislative and/or regulatory environment at the federal level.

Extensive experience working with Congress and the Administration, including lobbying.

Knowledge about the congressional appropriations process and federal health care programs.

Ability to work with policymakers and staff of all ideologies; ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.

Proven ability to compile, analyze and interpret legislation, budgets and data.

Strong written communication, verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required for effective interaction with volunteers, elected officials, legislative staff and other high-profile persons.

Proven ability to meet strict deadlines, in a fast-paced environment.

Solid organizational skills and high-level proficiency with MS Office products.

Preferred Experience:

Experience working on Capitol Hill and/or in federal policy for a patient advocacy health-related organization.

Working knowledge of the breast cancer public policy and advocacy environment.
