The Director of Global Child Health Advocacy will lobby, promote, and represent the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to the U.S. Congress and Administration, global health entities, and the public on global child health policy affecting infants, children, adolescents, and pediatricians. This individual will advocate to promote global child health before the U.S. Congress and Executive Branch agencies, plus collaborate with and provide leadership within internal and external stakeholders to advance AAP public policy, legislative, and advocacy goals related to global child health. This position will develop and provide strategic counsel for Executive Committee/Board of Directors and AAP committees, councils, and sections, as well as educate and engage AAP members in advocacy activities related to global child health.

Some duties include:
1. Lobby Congress. Advise Congressional Members and staff on AAP positions and concerns on specific issues and gain their support. Suggest legislative and other strategies. Monitor and analyze proposed legislation and recommend appropriate actions. Develop and employ necessary action(s) to achieve desired outcomes. Draft testimony, correspondence, legislative amendments, floor statements, talking points, memoranda, and other documents. Prepare witnesses. Develop and maintain a network of appropriate contacts, and foster relationships necessary to achieve the AAP agenda for children.
2. Lobby the Executive Branch. Advise regulatory and Administration officials on AAP positions and concerns on specific issues. Analyze regulations and other government actions and prepare comments in consultation with AAP committees and councils. Initiate and coordinate administrative and regulatory responses/interaction. Provide analyses for AAP members as needed. Serve as a point of contact for federal agencies and multi-lateral entities.
3. Advocate to global policy organizations such as World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN). Attend, prepare, and deliver statements and interventions on behalf of AAP at the UN General Assembly, the WHO Executive Board, and the World Health Assembly. Monitor the global advocacy organizations’ priorities and identify gaps and roles of the AAP. Monitor and respond to global frameworks, publications, and policy guidance within the UN and WHO systems.
4. Organize, coordinate, participate in, and lead in national coalitions and roundtables important to AAP. Attend meetings as AAP representative and work to develop consensus on issues to be most effective in lobbying and engagement activities. Report developments to AAP senior leadership and/or AAP committees, councils, sections, and staff involving AAP members when appropriate.
5. Provide necessary staffing and resources to AAP senior leadership, the Executive Committee, and Board of Directors.
6. Staff selected AAP committees, councils, task forces, and project advisory bodies as assigned. Attend and participate in meetings and present briefings/updates and analyses on relevant issues. Coordinate AAP stakeholders on federal issues, including global child health, that cross jurisdiction of multiple committees, councils, and sections.
7. Educate and engage AAP members on advocacy issues. Deliver speeches and prepare materials to educate members on effective advocacy. Identify opportunities for AAP members and leadership to provide expert testimony, attend meetings, or serve on Participate in advocacy education efforts, including the annual Legislative Conference, the Annual Leadership Forum, the National Convention & Exhibition, Advocacy Days, and other AAP advocacy meetings. Plan and organize the Legislative Conference on a rotating basis.
8. In partnership with AAP senior leadership, lead the AAP global health advocacy priority matrix, including the introduction of new global advocacy initiatives such as standardizing and evaluating AAP global advocacy curriculum and related tools.
9. Advise AAP senior leadership on potential synergies between domestic and global child health issues to advance AAP priorities.
10. Collaborate with and coordinate among AAP staff to meet federal and global advocacy-related deliverables associated with grants.
11. Work with AAP senior leadership to identify potential funding opportunities and collaborate on the development of funding proposals related to programmatic advocacy initiatives for global child health.
12. Ensure the AAP retains UN special consultative status.



1. JD or other advanced degree in liberal arts, science, health, international affairs, government or other related discipline required, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and federal legislative and regulatory work experience.
2. Minimum 5 – 7 years of relevant experience on Capitol Hill, with the federal government or an advocacy organization, with a strong working knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process is required. Some expertise in global health is also required. Knowledge of US government and global health systems, multi-lateral entities, and project management is preferred.
3. Excellent diplomacy, interpersonal, negotiation, and oral/written communications skills required. Must be able to assume a full range of delegated responsibilities, work both independently and as part of a team, exercise good judgment, and display initiative. Knowledge of diverse groups and sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences is required. Regular travel (domestic and international) and weekend work required.
