The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, a national trade association engaged in government affairs and advocacy on behalf of the responsible pet care community, seeks to hire an experienced government relations professional for the position of Director of Government Affairs. This position is based in Alexandria, VA.

Position Responsibilities:

• Managing all aspects of legislative/regulatory portfolio including tracking legislation, writing comments and giving testimony, meeting with lawmakers, coalition building and management, and managing contract lobbyists in approximately 15 states.

• Building and maintaining strategic relationships with allied organizations, government officials, industry partners, and stakeholders to support the organization’s advocacy and policy agenda.

• Working with 2-3 junior government affairs team members to provide guidance on legislative, engagement, grassroots, and lobbying strategies.

• Serving as staff lead for the Zoonosis Committee, including monthly conference calls, providing leadership and guidance to industry on animal health, disease prevention, COVID-19, antibiotics policy, and regulatory issues.

• Working with communications staff to develop and distribute communication, education, and public awareness tools to support the overall legislative and regulatory strategy.

• Serving as a liaison to regulatory agencies, including Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), state departments of health, and state departments of agriculture.

• Some travel required (face-to-face meetings with lawmakers, regulators, and staff, providing testimony, and attending industry events).

Professional Experience:

• Five to seven years of trade association, government relations, Congressional, or state legislative staff experience.

• Experience working in policy areas such as agriculture, taxes, environment, business regulations, and retail and consumer issues.

• Experience managing legislative and grassroots operations.

• Experience with grassroots advocacy tools (such as CQ Roll Call or Fiscal Note).

• Excellent verbal, written, research, and organizational skills, including supervisory experience preferred.
