The American Cleaning Institute’s (ACI) Government Affairs Department operates at the federal, state and local levels across the country. The incumbent assists the General Counsel & Senior Vice President, Government Affairs in managing and directing the outside legislative and certain shared regulatory interests of the Institute. This will include the development and implementation of ACI legislative and targeted regulatory policy with respect to federal issues, laws and standards to further Institute interests.

The incumbent will have issue responsibility for policy oversight with respect to legislative and certain regulatory interactions and non-scientific external communications. Interaction with external stakeholders as well as ACI members is a critical function of the position. The incumbent will independently, in consultation with, or at the direction of the General Counsel & Senior Vice President, Government Affairs, work to further ACI programs aligned with ACI strategic goals and related priorities including the Government Affairs Committee and the ACI Political Action Committee (ACI PAC).

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of six (6) years’ progressive experience with federal legislative and public-policymaking bodies including federal government experience on Capitol Hill.
  • Must possess strong knowledge of federal government affairs with a strong familiarity with legislative and regulatory functions, processes and procedures.
  • Must have working familiarity with political action committee (PAC) functions.
  • Must have familiarity and experience working with non-governmental organizations or other non-profit stakeholders.
  • Must possess strong written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal engagement skills in order to develop and nurture key stakeholder relationships in the interest of the Institute.
  • Must be detail-oriented, self-initiating, well-organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and independently.
  • Should be results-oriented and exhibits excellent judgement.
  • Should have a high-level of energy and a willingness to take on a variety of assignments.
  • Ability to read, interpret, analyze and write legislative language.
  • Ability to organize and manage projects from inception to completion.
  • Ability to plan and effectively respond to changing circumstances and issues.

Major Responsibilities

    • Assist in the development and implementation of an integrated federal government relations plan focused on maintaining and building the Institute’s relationships with key political and institutional stakeholders.
    • Support the development and execution of ACI’s long-term policy and advocacy strategy specifically related to federal cleaning product ingredient communication.
    • Coordinate with Institute’s members and colleagues to develop political strategies to achieve desired outcomes.
    • Plan for and track relevant committee hearings, legislation, and federal proposals and communicate relevant information to member companies and Institute colleagues in an efficient and effective manner.
    • Monitor, track and advise on federal legislative and regulatory events related to the Institute’s priority federal policy agenda as appropriate and in consultation with the Government Affairs team.
    • Assist in the representation of ACI before federal legislative and regulatory bodies as needed and appropriate to accomplish federal advocacy objectives.
    • Lead specific government affairs priority issues as assigned or directed including federal-focused ingredient communication advocacy and manage and direct outside vendors and internal ACI team members engagement.
    • Represent ACI at meetings, hearings and conferences on issues of interest.

Form, manage or participate in inter-industry coalitions on issues as appropriate or directed. Respond or assist in providing responses to member inquiries on legislative, policy and general matters. In coordination with and at the direction of the General Counsel & Senior Vice President, Government Affairs manage and oversee the day-to-day operation and public facing work of the ACI PAC.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Major Responsibilities

A. With Institute Staff:

Interacts heavily with entire ACI team.

B. With Institute Members:

Interaction with Government Affairs Committee, ACI PAC, standing committees, work groups and task forces, and other ACI members, as required.

C. Outside Institute:

Extensive interaction with advocacy entities including lobbyists, legislative coalitions and groups; industry group, federal government agency staffs, and legal counsel as required; and, with media as necessary in close consultation with the Senior Vice President Communications, Outreach & Membership.
