About Us:

The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) has the largest steel industry trade association membership in the United States. The SMA is the voice for America’s most responsible and sustainable steel producers. Members account for over 70 percent of domestic steel production using an innovative, 21st-century production process that is less energy-intensive and has a lower carbon footprint. Steel is an essential material. More steel is recycled than aluminum, paper and plastic combined. SMA members produce steel with up to 75 percent lower carbon intensity than traditional steelmaking.

Overview

We are seeking a Director, Government Affairs who can provide internal strategic advice and lead external engagement to help advance the domestic steel industry.
Our Director of Government Affairs will be able to navigate legislative, regulatory, and policy issues in such areas as sustainability, trade policy, and infrastructure investment. SMA focuses on issues affecting domestic steelmakers. We are looking for an excellent communicator who has developed strong working relationships with key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee association engagement with Members of Congress and staff, regulators, and agencies on legislation and federal policy affecting steelmakers
  • Develop and maintain relationships and collaborations with key stakeholders and advocacy organizations, including other trade associations, coalitions, organized labor and other groups, to advance SMA member interests
  • Develop and execute government affairs strategies to promote SMA objectives related steel market development
  • Support SMA’s branding, and messaging strategies and objectives through effective communication with legislative and executive branch officials
  • Help position SMA members as leaders in sustainable steel production with key stakeholders
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • 5 plus years’ experience working with Congress, federal agencies, trade/business associations.
  • Experience as a congressional staff member or experience working in congressional engagement preferred
  • Proven track record of building relationships with congressional and federal agency staff
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and requirements related to government affairs functions
