The Director, Government Affairs reports to the Vice President, Public Policy and works as part of a team with the Associate Director of Grassroots Advocacy and the Public Policy Manager. The Director, Government Affairs designs and directs all aspects of government affairs including identifying legislative and regulatory opportunities, securing appropriations, and advancing legislation and policies through nonpartisan advocacy with members of Congress, congressional committees, and relevant federal agencies. The Director, Government Affairs is also responsible for collaborating with the Associate Director of Grassroots Advocacy to mobilize Association chapters and volunteers to achieve results and represents the association in national coalitions focused on the needs of people living with ALS.


  • Leads all aspects of a comprehensive federal government affairs program to lobby Congress and the Administration on major legislative and policy issues including securing appropriations and passing legislation to accelerate development, approval and access to new treatments; protecting health and welfare benefits; and empower people with ALS to engage with the world in the way they want.
  • Evaluates complex federal legislative and regulatory proposals to identify threats, opportunities and develop creative solutions on issues impacting people living with ALS, their caregivers, and the ALS Association.
  • Identifies and nurtures congressional leaders and mobilizes them to introduce legislation and lead “Dear Colleagues” on ALS priority issues.
  • Crafts policy positions on a wide range of emerging issues to convey positions and influence policymakers including but not limited to issue briefs, analysis, testimony, blogs, and comments.
  • Collaborates with all departments to ensure cross-functional alignment across the Association on a wide range of issues and projects.
  • Represents the Association in key coalitions of patients, clinicians, and researchers; identifies new policy opportunities; and builds partnerships to achieve the organization’s mission and policy priorities.
  • Devises campaigns to mobilize grasstops leaders (chapter executives and key volunteer leaders) to influence policymaking at appropriate pressure points, including engaging, training, and supporting individuals who have 1-1 interactions with members of Congress.
  • Supervises public policy consultants on projects as directed by the VP, Public Policy.
  • Spearheads annual department strategic planning and budget development under close consultation with the VP of Public Policy, Associate Director of Grassroots Advocacy, and Manager of Public Policy Initiatives.
  • Ensures and delivers compliance with federal lobbying requirements, including compiling lobbying reports on a quarterly basis.


  • Bachelor’s degree with 4-8 years of work experience in healthcare government affairs and advocacy or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to register as a lobbyist.
  • Experience in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns with Congress and the Administration in a nonpartisan fashion and coalition efforts. Experience using advocacy software.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently to manage multiple projects and designated consultants.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Strategic thinker able to develop new opportunities to advance the Association’s priorities and mission.
