The American Soybean Association (ASA) is a national trade association that advocates on behalf of all U.S. soybean farmers on domestic and international trade issues. It is the collective voice of 300,000 producers in 30 soybean-producing states represented through 26 state affiliates. ASA is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and its Government Affairs team is based in Washington, D.C.

A primary focus for ASA is policy development and implementation, including adoption of policy goals at an annual meeting of ASA’s voting delegates. We carry out these goals through advocacy efforts before Congress and Executive Branch agencies, activating support at the grassroots level, and in contacts with the media. We are a premier organization with an excellent track record and reputation for effectiveness.

Director of Government Affairs (Trade)

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Government Affairs, you’ll contribute to policy strategy development and execution, collaborate with the communications team, and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders. In addition to experience in agricultural policy, you must have a team-oriented approach, a value-added mindset, a passion for agriculture, and a commitment to excellence. As a Director of Government Affairs, we’ll rely on you to focus on trade in addition to other issues of importance to ASA membership.


  • Fully embrace the ASA mission to advocate for U.S. soybean farmers on policy and represent the interests of U.S. soybean farmers in Washington, D.C.
  • Establish relationships with policymakers in Congress and in key agencies to position production agriculture favorably.
  • Advance a legislative and regulatory strategy to shape proposed or existing policies which would have a significant impact on soybean farmers. This includes the full range of issues impacting trade policy.
  • Participate in PAC development activity and events.
  • Engage with industry partners and other stakeholders to establish effective coalitions aimed at influencing legislative, regulatory and legal decisions which would have a significant impact on U.S. soybean farmers.
  • Assist the Communications Department in providing policy updates to Congress, the ASA Board of Directors, ASA Executive Committee leadership, industry partners and senior staff.
  • Collaborate regularly with ASA’s international partner, U.S. Soybean Export Council, on trade policy and international market access issues.
  • Operate as the staff lead with ASA’s farmer-leader Trade Promotion and International Affairs Committee.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Business, Political Science or related field.
  • 5 – 7 years of experience working on federal legislative and regulatory matters.
  • Experience developing federal legislative and/or regulatory policy.
  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal.
