The Director, Government and External Affairs leads the company’s policy development and advocacy efforts, including management of trade association memberships and relationship building with elected and community leaders in the areas where Compass Minerals operates. In addition, this position manages other special projects, such as the development and publication of the annual ESG report, to further the company’s public affairs priorities. As a key role in cultivating and protecting the company’s external reputation, this position also supports the SVP and Chief Public Affairs Officer in the development of stakeholder communication to promote a positive image of the company.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in government affairs and advocacy, with additional corporate communications experience a plus.

Essential Job Functions (including but not limited to the following):

Public Policy Analysis and Issues Management:

  • Partner with internal teams to understand company strategies and objectives; prioritize issues and focus areas by assessing business needs against political realities and current landscape
  • Track and analyze impacts to the company of significant legislative initiatives at both the federal level and within those states where Compass Minerals operates
  • Develop and execute government affairs strategies, leveraging company’s internal business expertise and executive leadership to pursue opportunities and mitigate risk in the policy arena
  • Represent company with elected and local community leaders
  • Build local relationships in areas where we operation, including grassroots coalitions when necessary

Trade Association Management:

  • Manage company’s membership in major North American industry trade associations, such as The Fertilizer Institute (TFI), Industrial Minerals Association of North America, (IMA-NA), and the Ontario Mining Association (OMA)
  • Ensure policy positions important to the company are represented and actively advocated for by association leadership and staff
  • Support active participation in trade associations by company leaders, including working to secure board leadership roles as appropriate

External Communications and Media Relations:

  • Serve as surrogate to the SVP and Chief Public Affairs Officer for media and general public relations activities across the enterprise
  • Collaborate with Investor Relations to ensure consistent messaging and act as a company spokesperson when necessary for dissemination of corporate information
  • Balance complex, fast-moving and unexpected communications challenges while providing clarity to key external audiences, as well as protecting and furthering a positive company reputation

Special Project Management:

  • Sustainability: Drive and coordinate the creation and cross-vehicle dissemination of timely Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting
  • Crisis Communications: Maintain a dynamic and overarching crisis communications plan for the company
  • Reputational Management: Develop, track and monitor reputational assessments to ensure steady progression and improvement

Digital Asset Management: Lead the implementation of the corporate digital roadmap, partnering closely with the IT and commercial teams, consolidating and updating an active digital portfolio to positively engage external target audiences



 Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public relations, communications or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of government affairs, public affairs, and/or communications experience, with a significant portion of that time working within a corporate environment
  • Experience within a publicly-traded company a plus
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams a plus

  • Strategic thinker with an ability to rapidly understand, distill, and communicate diverse business challenges and opportunities
  • Ability to manage multiple, high-level projects simultaneously, with superior attention to detail
  • Demonstrates a high-level of customer service, responding promptly to internal and external needs in a tactful, professional manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills; team player with a proven ability to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of an organization including senior management
  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and Power Point
