Reporting to the VP, Global Government & Industry Affairs, the Director, Government & Industry Affairs (GIA), Agriculture directs legislative and regulatory activities critical to Nutrien’s global business operations, reputation, and performance. The position is responsible for advancing the Company’s policy agenda, and involves leading the internal policy setting process, issue analysis, strategic planning, and advocacy at the principal level.
What you will do:
- Lead government relations and lobbyist on agriculture, environmental, bio-economy, and sustainability issues + Interact daily with senior government leadership/officials and represent Nutrien before a wide range of stakeholders + Interact with Nutrien’s trade associations, often serving on boards and industry committees, and work closely with Nutrien’s customer and other partners in a fast paced, demanding environment + Provide leadership to and develop the skills of the PAC Manager to create a cohesive and aligned GIA team + Direct lobbying of legislative and executive branch officials across the spectrum of leadership, from staff to Members of Congress, Agency Heads, and Department Secretaries – as well as working closely with Embassies and international organizations + Serve as the lead for government relations and the relationship manager for a group of Nutrien’s businesses (internal clients) + Work across Nutrien’s diverse business portfolio to develop corporate positioning and advocacy strategies to meet Nutrien’s public policy and business objectives + Manage coalitions and trade association activities from the grassroots level to the most senior leadership in support of company policy objectives
What you will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Business, or related field from an accredited college or university + Minimum twelve (12) years of experience in public policy work, government affairs, or similar field + Minimum five (5) years of experience in the ag industry + Demonstrated experience with a wide range of agriculture and food supply chain stakeholders, policies and processes + Experience in building and maintaining relationships with elected officials and partners + Strong curiosity, learning capacity and independent decision-making ability + Strong business acumen with an agricultural focus + Strong forethought and critical thinking about the agriculture business and customer needs + Comprehensive understanding of the U.S. federal policy development and implementation processes + Excellent presentation (written and verbal) communication skills + Proven ability as self-starter, and effective problem solver with strong analytic skills + Ability to interface effectively with government officials, media, special interest groups, employees and community partners + Ability to set priorities in a fast-paced, demanding environment + Ability to quickly step in and support objectives outside of direct business portfolio + Exceptional presentation skills + Willingness and ability to travel
