About the job

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) is a Washington, DC trade association representing the dietary supplement and functional food industry. CRN is seeking a Director, Government Relations to manage the federal and state government affairs initiatives. The Director will assure timely and accurate actions/responses to legislative and regulatory issues and will assume other responsibilities as assigned, including federal lobbying and advocacy efforts.

General responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead advocate for CRN positions before State Legislatures on critical industry issues
  • Develop relationships with key legislators and staff to effectively channel the goals and desires of association, as directed through the Government Relations Committee and State Subcommittee
  • Monitor, track and report on introduced legislation, amendments, committee hearings, mark-ups and floor votes
  • Serve as principal staff liaison for CRN’s Government Relations State Subcommittee
  • Organize CRN Lobbying Days: develop programs, schedule meetings with elected officials, coordinate speakers, and provide itineraries, background materials and talking points
  • Lead/participate in various industry coalitions on State and Federal projects
  • Develop and edit correspondence, memoranda, reports, budgets and presentation materials
  • Act as information resource for members and other departments regarding department activities and policies
  • Special projects as assigned

Position Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate Degree, advanced degree a plus
  • Federal, state or local legislative and/or policy experience, sustainability experience a plus
  • Critical thinking, problem solving skills, attention to detail and ability to make decisions independently
  • Positive professional image and ability to respond appropriately to a variety of situations, including dealing with conflicting priorities and the handling of confidential information
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines with accurate results
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) for effective interaction with all levels of division, company, and external partners
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Please note that this is a Washington, DC based position; however, some travel may be required
