Under the supervision of the National Director, Government Relations, the Director, Government Relations is responsible for the daily management, leadership and support of BGCA policy priorities within assigned federal government agencies. This includes planning and implementation of work related to BGCA Federal policy initiatives and Capitol Hill. This position manages and executes BGCA’s policy and funding strategies, as well as the interaction with Congress, Federal agencies and their staff.  Together in teamwork with the Senior Director, this position is vital to our goal of strengthening our Movement by growing and diversifying sources of federal revenue to BGCA and local Boys & Girls Clubs

Responsibilities

. Under direction of the National Director, Government Relations:

  • Assist in executing BGCA’s Federal policy and advocacy strategies including securing support from Congress and agencies for BGCA policy priorities
  • Engage with Agency, House and Senate staff and other stakeholders that are instrumental in garnering support for BGCA Federal funding and policy goals
  • Identify emerging opportunities relevant to BGCA goals and work to diversify funding pipelines
  • Attend Congressional and Agency meetings, hearings, briefings, etc., document these meetings in the designated program, and disseminate to stakeholders with assignments for follow-up
  • Ensure that follow-up assignments are completed and documented
  • Assist with positioning BGCA leadership to testify as experts on youth development issues
  • Assist in engaged participation of board members, support effective board functions, reports and roles, and ensure the board and board committees are provided with timely information
  • Monitor, interpret, and disseminate information on actions by the Federal Government that impact local Boys & Girls Clubs
  • Work with national staff to strengthen overall BGCA Federal policy strategies and the government relations plan of work
  • Support the Government Relations team regarding BGCA Federal policy strategies, including development of materials to be used on the Hill and with agencies and identifying and cultivating champions for BGCA policy priorities
  • Support implementation of advocacy events, coalition building, and letter writing and grassroots work, including implementation of annual Youth of the Year events and National Day of Advocacy.
  • Assist with other duties/projects as assigned by the National Director, Government Relations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or education/experience equivalency preferred
  • Minimum of three to five years of experience on Capitol Hill, Agency or related government relations experience
  • Demonstrated successful experience in planning and executing advocacy activities, working with Federal agency policy makers and their staffs
  • Working knowledge of the Federal policy process and ability to draft legislative text, including authorization bill and report language

  • Extremely motivated individual with the ability to take initiative and work as a team player; understands the processes of Congress, Executive Branch, and assigned Federal Agencies. Strong written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability of strategy development and execution and prioritization of work. Demonstrated high standards of ethics and integrity; self-starter with ability to anticipate department needs and respond to those needs; builds trusting long-term relationships with individuals and organizations; creates and communicates tactical objectives and action plans; Acts as a good steward of resources; excellent customer service skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the internet.
