Position Overview
The Director, Governmental Affairs and Public Policy represents AGA before the U.S. Congress, administrative agencies of the federal government and key policymakers and stakeholders, and provides analysis of legislative proposals, hearing summaries, policies, and prepares position papers.
Role and Responsibilities
- Support the Managing Director’s efforts in the development of federal legislative priorities and positions as well as development and execution of strategies to achieve those goals.
- Take a lead role on AGA issue teams that require legislative activity.
- Responsible for working collaboratively across functional boundaries within AGA.
- Identify, analyze, monitor and influence federal government policies and legislation; advises AGA member companies on key issues in support of advocacy efforts.
- Within their issue portfolio, lead efforts to lobby, build coalitions and expand relationships with key decision-makers, policymakers, and relevant stakeholders.
- Inform, coordinate and mobilize member companies and other interested parties to achieve AGA’s federal government affairs goals.
- In collaboration with the Managing Director, works with members of the AGA Legislative Committee to develop and execute legislative policy positions.
- Develop testimony, hearing summaries, advocacy materials, and prepare position papers.
- Represent AGA on relevant coalitions and at political or official events.
- Assist with industry political, policy and membership event planning, participation, and execution.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- At least five years of federal lobbying or political experience.
- Thorough understanding of legislative processes, the workings of Congress and relevant congressional committees.
- Experience working with Members of Congress, committee staff, and personal office congressional staff.
- Proven success with advocacy campaigns
- Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and to build and maintain internal and external partnerships.
- Experience with the utilities, the energy industry, energy policy, or related subject areas that enhance the ability to advocate for the natural gas industry.
- Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple demands, meet deadlines, and handle rapidly shifting priorities.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Trade association and natural gas industry experience desired.
