The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) seeks the Director, Government Relations and Community Engagement.
The Director, Governmental Relations and Community Engagement focuses on developing and strengthening relationships with governmental stakeholders, policymakers and legislators in Carson City, Southern Nevada, and other areas of the state in an effort to build trust, demonstrate transparency, and strengthen two-way communications. This individual will possess high ethical conduct, integrity and an excellent professional reputation to engage these key partners in gaining support and assistance in promoting the University’s strategic initiatives in concert with their constituent groups.
This position will be based in Las Vegas during the interim period of the biennium in order to promote ready availability to key groups in Southern Nevada. During the Legislative Sessions, this individual will be the point of contact for the University’s Nevada State legislative activities, in coordination with the Chancellor’s Office and other NSHE institution representatives, to further the Board of Regents five strategic goals and other initiatives including promotion of the value and benefits of higher education.
As the chief advisor for University governmental relations, this position will collaborate with internal campus representatives to develop opportunities for University students, faculty and staff to become more closely aligned with local and state governmental priorities. This position will serve as a comprehensive point of contact in making University resources and expertise available to state and local government partners.
This individual will also be the point of contact for providing policy suggestions and responses on behalf of the University to the Governor’s Finance Office, Legislative Council Bureau and other state-level entities as well as provide assistance in developing fiscal notes, briefings, and other communications as necessary.
Bachelor’s Degree and six (6) years OR Master’s Degree and four (4) years of related managerial and/or professional work experience.
• Direct experience leading a government affairs operation, including work at state legislative sessions
• Community relations
Master’s Degree and seven (7) or Juris Doctorate and five (5) years of related managerial and/or professional work experience.
• Legislative, Governor’s Finance Office or Legislative Council Bureau experience
• Government affairs/relations experience, with specific experience working at the Nevada Legislature biennial sessions
• Experience in a higher education setting, specifically the Nevada System of Higher Education, or similar large public organization, and an understanding of the role a major public university or agency has in a metropolitan environment
• Experience working with federal, municipal and county governments. Understanding of the Land-Grant System and the unique challenges and opportunities provided by units within the University that provide state-wide services
• Understanding of University’s mission and Land-Grant Status
Valid Driver’s License or Nevada Driver’ License within 30 days of employment
Normally Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but evening and weekend meetings will often be necessary. This schedule is subject to change based on organizational needs.
Within the state, regionally, and nationally as needed. This position will be expected to have a physical presence in Carson City during the regular and special legislative Sessions.
The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, long-term disability, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
