What will you be doing?

•    Building and maintaining key relationships with public officials, and educating on issues that impact the firm and clients.
•    Providing government affairs counsel within Barclays to management and business units on the impact of potential issues, proposals and laws.  Leveraging the business and public policy expertise of the Regulatory Policy teams to identify policy and branding/reputational risks and opportunities.
•    Communicating developments (issues, legislation, oversight, etc.) that require management consideration and potential changes to existing policies and procedures across the business enterprise.
•    Supporting Barclays’ brand visibility with key government officials in Washington, DC and key footprint states.  This includes effective communication/representation related to public officials, trade associations, coalitions, and other thought leaders and groups.
•    Working with senior management to maximize Barclays’ involvement in trade associations, and promote Barclays’ role as a global leader in the financial services industry.
•    All government relations activities including:  issues identification, analysis, and prioritization for business unit senior management; serving as both congressional and executive branch liaison on banking, trade, tax, and investment issues; execution of a strategic plan that includes policy and political engagement.
•    Overseeing government relations efforts and staff, as well as outside vendors and consultants.
•    Working with business units to determine areas of client interest and facilitate value-added engagement.
•    Implementing a political engagement program and Political Action Committee (PAC) management.
•    Ensuring strict compliance with firm policies, lobbying registration, PAC and ethics rules.

What we’re looking for:

•    Strong management, interpersonal, organizational, negotiation and verbal/written communication skills.
•    Proven ability to manage a large portfolio, while working in a fast-paced and senior environment, where adaptability and strategic thinking (globally and as part of a management team) are critical.
o    Significant experience in government, government relations, and/or public affairs.
•    Strong knowledge of the US legislative and political processes, as well as departments and/or agencies (heavy emphasis on Federal level).
•    Undergraduate degree required.

Skills that will help you in the role:

•    Experience with financial services industry very desirable.  Experience could be through service in the legislative branch as a professional staff person; executive branch experience at a senior level; trade association experience at a senior management level; and/or experience with another financial services corporation or non-profit organization with government relations management responsibilities.
•    Strong knowledge of: banking, financial services and products, and markets, particularly commercial banking services; markets activities and investment banking; and consumer lending and credit cards.
•    Understanding of compliance laws regulating political activity.
•    An Advanced degree such as a Juris Doctor, Master in Business Administration or Master in Public Administration.
