ABOUT THE OFFICE OF GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS:

The Office of Government Affairs coordinates and facilitates the interactions of Stanford University and Stanford Health Care (SHC) with local, state and federal governments, as well as its relationship with neighboring communities. The Office promotes the interests of the University’s and SHC’s key constituents through contact with public officials, involvement with educational organizations, tracking of pertinent legislation and direct advocacy on a wide variety of issues from land use policies to funding for the basic sciences to health care. Government Affairs also supports campus-community efforts that contribute to the vitality of the greater community.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director, Local Government Affairs will expand our presence throughout the San Francisco Bay peninsula and strengthen our engagement with stakeholders of importance to the University, as well as plan and implement new strategies between the Office of Government Affairs and the surrounding local governments (a geographical area will be assigned accordingly). You will implement new modes of engagement to develop, expand and enhance relationships with university supporters and external constituencies through communication and education initiatives. You will represent the Office of Government Affairs at meetings and events, as well as maintain regular contacts with policy leaders, and local government officials and staff. You will help build coalitions with other constituencies on issues of mutual interest and maintain consistent contact with local government and community officials and their staff.

In this role, you will:

  • Enhance and maintain positive working relationships with policy leaders and government officials, along with other member associations.
  • Plan, design and coordinate events and campus visits of local leaders that further the university’s mission and relate to community goals.
  • Attend public meetings and hearings and provide reports back to the government affairs staff and leadership on items of importance.
  • Monitor and track local government public meeting agendas for items of relevance to the university and its operations.
  • Provide community-based audiences with selected, proactive and timely information about university positions, accomplishments and interests.
  • Represent the university at public meetings, hearings, and community events.
  • Maintain and enhance outreach efforts and programs aimed at policy organizations, key individuals and opinion makers, and the general public.
  • Analyze and monitor local activity of interest to the university. Brief senior university leadership and government affairs staff on issues of importance.
  • Research, track and document issues that are relevant to achieving the university’s objectives in local government relations.
  • Work collaboratively with other GCR staff on special projects as assigned.
  • Support the production of materials such as newsletter, electronic news and web-based content in partnership with University Communications.
  • Commit to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion.
  • Other duties may also be assigned. 

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Knowledge of local government and familiarity with community issues/concerns.
  • Excellent judgment and knowledge of political processes.
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex and sometimes controversial issues.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to diplomatically resolve problems and build key relationships.
  • A willingness and ability to reach out to many constituencies and understand their needs and priorities.
  • Superb written and verbal communication, active listening skills and the interpersonal skills needed to work with a broad range of individuals successfully, including Stanford stakeholders, local officials, business owners, policy based organizations, and the public.
  • Working knowledge of land use planning and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
  • Mac and PC proficient and have working knowledge of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Keynote, Constant Contact and the complete Microsoft suite of programs.
  • Excellent follow-up and organizational skills necessary; detail-oriented.
  • Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
  • Ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside of the organization.
  • Ability to follow direction and complete tasks with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated success in following through and completing projects.
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
