Director of Campaigns

Washington, DC

Are you a highly strategic and experienced digital campaigner with strong management skills who wants to lead a team fighting for a country where every child and family can thrive? If so, we’re looking for you!

The challenges we face are clear: Too many children in our country go to bed hungry every night. Too many parents lie awake worrying about challenges like the lack of affordable childcare, inadequate schools, the influence of social media and big tech on our kids’ brains, the epidemic of youth depression and anxiety, the rising cost of raising children, and the impossibility of protecting kids from the many harms of structural racism and sexism.

The pandemic has exacerbated these harms and thrown into sharp relief our country’s failure to support families and children.

But change is possible – and we need your help to make it happen! We believe parental love is a potent force for change, and with our unique model combining timely parenting content and digital organizing (more on that below), we are helping parents to take on the institutions and policies that harm kids.

Our campaign team is new, but we’ve already made a splash:

  • We delivered over a million petition signatures to stop Donald Trump’s proposed cuts to free school lunch.
  • We convinced AT&T not to charge data overage fees to families during remote learning.
  • Our campaign for online safety has held the biggest tech giants accountable for harms to children and led to multiple policy changes.
  • We mobilized hundreds of thousands of parents to secure additional COVID stimulus payments and are leading a national campaign to make the expanded child tax credit permanent.

Now we are searching for a talented, passionate and strategic senior campaign leader to guide the campaign team.

The goals for this role are to:

  • Strengthen our growing campaign team and build a culture of innovative campaigning
  • Create and run breakthrough, parent-driven campaigns that improve the lives of families and kids
  • Experiment and learn to build our parent community and grow our impact

Here’s some of the awesome stuff you’ll do:

  • Identify great campaign opportunities
  • Run high-impact grassroots and media campaigns, from soup to nuts
  • Plan, oversee, and direct creative and powerful online and offline actions
  • Lead our campaign team, helping the team work together across issue areas and creating systems to support coordination and shared learning
  • Set campaign priorities with the Co-Directors
  • Manage, train, oversee, and support staff and freelance campaigners in multiple issue areas, hiring additional campaigners as needed and as funding allows
  • Work with Co-Directors to fundraise for our advocacy work from large and small donors
  • Write and edit campaign outreach and materials across multiple digital channels, including email, SMS, Facebook Messenger, video, and social
  • Oversee tactical experiments to support growth and enhance impact
  • Drive our work to cultivate and support member spokespeople and leaders
  • Take ownership of our campaign narrative and advocacy user experience
  • Co-create media strategies with our communications team and act as a media spokesperson
  • Lead and participate in coalitions and partnerships, working with allies to maximize impact

You’ll likely be a great fit if you:

  • Have significant experience running strategic campaigns – 5-10+ years preferred
  • Are a strong campaign strategist
  • Are experienced overseeing staff and developing leadership
  • Are familiar with digital tactics and organizing
  • Are an excellent project manager and can deftly handle multiple projects
  • Take initiative and can move fast to meet opportunity
  • Can thrive in a startup culture, with tons of opportunity for innovation, and plenty of stuff that still needs to be figured out
  • Think experimentally and can take a learning approach to our work
  • Are self-motivated, efficient, and focused on results
  • Can write powerfully for a parent audience across different media
  • Are media savvy and know how to get a message out
  • Care about the issues we work on (you don’t need to be a parent, just concerned about the next generation)

This is a full time role, which reports to the Co-Director. Schedule and geography are flexible as long as you are generally available for a good chunk of the 12 – 5 PM ET window on most weekdays. Salary ranges from $100,000 – $120,000 depending on experience. Benefits include health insurance (with cost-share for dependents) for employees working > 75% time, three weeks of vacation (plus holidays and the last week of the calendar year off), paid family and sick leave, retirement match after one year, and a FSA account. This position is considered exempt for overtime purposes.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and interviews will begin on August 9th. We encourage folks to apply as soon as possible.

ParentsTogether is a community of over 2.5 million parents and grandparents working together to make the world a better place for children and families.

We are a small-but-growing team using a unique strategy to mobilize parents. Our experimental approach has helped us achieve growth breakthroughs on platforms from Messenger to TikTok. We provide timely, highly-engaging content on the topics parents care about the most – and then use those same channels to organize parents for economic justice, pandemic relief, public education, affordable childcare, kids’ health, racial justice, protection for immigrant families, and other important priorities.

As an organization, we are creative, collaborative, and work to solve challenges together. We have a positive, low-ego, low-drama work culture. All of us love our work and are driven to help ParentsTogether succeed. Our strategy framework is based on lean startup principles. We try out ideas quickly, see what works, and iterate.

At ParentsTogether, we have an intersectional analysis and believe that building a multiracial, cross-class parent movement is non-negotiable. We are actively working to build a diverse team of staff and contractors; people of color, people from poor and working class backgrounds, LGBTQ folks, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate based upon gender, race, national origin, disability, age, religion, sexual orientation, or gender expression.
