BOMA International, a vibrant trade association based in downtown Washington, D.C., is seeking a full-time Director of Communications. The successful candidate will direct and manage the overall content strategy for the organization, including editorial planning and development, sourcing articles, project management for various communications vehicles, copyediting and drafting other content as needed. Additionally, the candidate will oversee media relations efforts; draft speeches and talking points; and direct social media strategy.

This position involves interaction with a dynamic team and across internal departments, as well as with volunteer leadership and BOMA local associations. Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with a focus on communications, journalism, public relations, English, liberal arts or a related field and three to five (3-5) years of experience in communications roles for a not-for-profit organization, trade association or communications/public relations firm. They must have excellent writing and copyediting skills, a knack for project management and a demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work independently in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. Experience with graphic design (including Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud apps), Hootsuite and AP Style a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Directing BOMA’s overall content strategy, including managing internal and external authors and overseeing content creation for various communications vehicles.
  • Developing an annual editorial calendar to achieve communications goals; sourcing content and writing articles as needed; and performing substantive editing of submitted content, maintaining BOMA’s voice and style.
  • In partnership with the Director of Digital Content and Online Strategy, managing content on BOMA International website, including overseeing the creation and art direction of article webpages.
  • Developing and implementing effective strategies to increase BOMA’s media coverage by fielding media inquiries, authoring and distributing press releases, tracking media coverage and maintaining an up-to-date list of key media contacts.
  • Drafting speeches, scripts, talking points and supporting materials for BOMA International leadership to deliver at industry events.
  • Collaborating with staff to develop and implement BOMA’s social media strategy to increase engagement.
  • Working together with a creative and energetic team to achieve annual business plan and budget goals. The successful candidate will work directly with the department’s Vice President of Communications & Marketing.
