NEXT for AUTISM transforms the national landscape of services for people with autism by strategically designing, launching, and supporting innovative initiatives.

While many organizations engage in advocacy or fund scientific research, NEXT for AUTISM addresses the needs of people with autism and their families across the country, right now. Founded in 2003, NEXT for AUTISM has built numerous initiatives with respected partners including national organizations, regional agencies, and local entities to enhance services for people with autism and maximize resources. Mutually beneficial partnerships with organizations such as New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University and Weill Cornell medical schools, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s Project SEARCH, the TEACCH Autism Program at the University of North Carolina, the JCC Manhattan, and Hunter College at the City University of New York, have led to the creation of extraordinary programs for children, adolescents, and adults.

Position Location: Remote

Reports to: Vice President, Development

Job Summary:

The Director of Communications will work as part of a dynamic fundraising team to manage and optimize the operations that are crucial to a thriving development operation. As part of this team, they will also help with writing and producing related development materials. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Development

Responsibilities:

The Director of Communications will implement a range of activities to expand NEXT for AUTISM’s supporter base and increase the organization’s visibility. The Director of Communications will develop and implement a comprehensive communications and outreach strategy consistent with the organization’s strategic plan and growth goals. This role has primary responsibility for:

  • Drive strategy and execution for NEXT’s external communication channels, primarily social and email campaigns, with the goals of raising awareness, growing followers, and raising funds for the organization.
  • Work with the entire NEXT team to document objectives, expected impact, and related narratives for the organization programs, projects, and fundraising priorities; create compelling and timely content about the organization’s work.
  • Develop brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms, including but not limited to creating a style guide.
  • Ensure all messaging aligns with the mission of NEXT for AUTISM
  • Write long form articles, design marketing materials, and write and manage the nextforautism.org website with the marketing team.
  • Develop yearly annual report with contracted vendors and develop other communications collateral and language as needed.
  • Develop weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual media activity reports that inform the Marketing/Communications strategy.
  • Coordinate with staff, Board, and committee members to generate compelling and timely content for and manage the organization’s social media outreach including social media, blogs, emails, marketing materials, and fundraising appeals.
  • Establish and monitor benchmarks for measuring the growth of the community, and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of new initiatives.
  • As needed, generate press releases and make follow-up calls to engage media in coverage.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media outlets.
  • Work with contracted Public Relations and Communications firm(s).

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a communications-focused role, either with an organization or at an agency.
  • Proficient in developing and editing compelling materials and campaigns; Canva experience highly preferred.
  • Self-starter, proactive, and intuitive.
  • Highly organized and team oriented with a sense of ownership for their work.
  • Positive attitude, open to new ideas, and embraces change.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and remote work environment and manage multiple projects, on time and budget. Proficient use of project management programs that aid internal communications (e.g., Asana).
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and comfort working in a very high-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Solid organizational and administrative skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, including staff, donors, and partners or otherwise inside and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrated outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including ability to prepare materials in various mediums for different audiences, purposes, and communication channels.
