Job Highlights

Director of Governmental Affairs North America

The Director of Governmental Affairs North America is responsible for the positioning of LANXESS and its business units towards elected officials at the federal, state and local level and key trade associations that help shape public policies and NGOs in this region.

  • Initiation of an active dialogue in political and legislative processes; demonstrate how engagement with elected officials can lead to enhancement of new – or the modification of existing laws; pursue government funding opportunities in support of LANXESS’ business growth.
  • Develop and foster relationships with federal, state and local officials in the (14) states where LANXESS operates to provide advice and counsel in support of LANXESS’ public policy objectives.
  • Monitor and analyze state and federal legislation relevant to LANXESS; support LANXESS business units in product defense (risks) and access to new markets (opportunities).
  • Develop and implement strategies and tactics for outreach, advocacy and market positioning aimed at achieving a competitive advantage, while minimizing potential negative impacts of public policy decisions.
  • Liaise with Group Functions (Production, Technology, Safety and Environment/Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Finance, Human Resources, etc.) and Communications/Political Relations in Germany (COM/POL) to ensure coordination and integration with the Company’s government affairs agenda.
  • Lobby on behalf of the Company and/or effectively manage contract lobbyists; work with Legal Counsel to ensure associated filing and compliance reporting.
  • Organization and implementation of political information events and workshops with political stakeholders at various LANXESS production sites and (R&D/office) locations.
  • Participate (with Head of COM AMS) in the development of budgets for expenses related to government affairs, government relations, advocacy, trade associations and (state association) memberships.
  • Develop and maintain a leadership position on behalf of the Company within the business government relations community and promote a positive corporate image among various stakeholder organizations at the state and federal level. Track, analyze and report on federal and state legislative activities.


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, Communications, Political Science, Law or other comparable degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience with 5-10 years in government affairs.
  • Experience and success working on a broad range of public policy issues (e.g., environment, climate, energy, chemicals).
  • Knowledge of political, economic and social environment in the U.S. at both the federal and state level.
  • Ability to positively represent the company’s views and positions with external audiences, especially legislators and public policy makers.
  • Excellent communications skills, collaborative, open, honest and respectful.
  • Ability to travel as needed on behalf of LANXESS.
  • This position is a hybrid role with time expected in the office several times per week each week.
  • Ideal candidate should reside in Washington D.C. or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
