The Director of Policy and Government Affairs will serve as the Secular Coalition for America’s registered lobbyist, responsible for building and maintaining relationships on Capitol Hill, and with the lawyers and lobbyists of our coalition’s member organizations. Along with the Executive Director, s/he will work to support and promote SCA’s public policy and legislative agendas.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in governmental relations, lobbying, public-policy, legislative and/or political environments with a focus on separation of church and state.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Proactively cultivate relationships with members of Congress, congressional staff and other policy professionals in Washington, D.C. in support and promotion of a comprehensive legislative agenda;

Manage the annual Legislative and Executive Branch Agenda (LEBA). This includes capturing all issues of importance to the secular community, liaising with lobbyists and attorneys from SCA’s member organizations, and engaging with our advisors and supporters;

Build and maintain close working relationships with our coalition partners and allied associations to advance common-cause issues. This includes other lobbyists, policy experts, and executives of SCA’s member organizations, as well as our partners in faith, science, and education communities, among others;

Draft public policy papers, position statements, fact sheets, talking points, and social media posts to persuade and inform our diverse and transpartisan audiences;

Proactively research policies to see what changes could be advantageous and which trends might negatively impact the Secular Coalition for America and our member organizations and partners;

Help craft and execute media campaigns and social action alerts to advance the mission of the Secular Coalition;

Represent the SCA at conferences and in the media;

Assist in planning and executing our annual Lobby Day event;

Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of policy, government relations, advocacy or other relevant experience; Capitol Hill experience strongly preferred

Experience developing and implementing legislative campaigns and advocating policy positions to internal and external audiences;

Passion for a strong, secular government, and familiarity with issues concerning church-state separation;

Respect for our mission and our constituents;

Superior verbal and written communication skills, able to articulate complex concepts in a concise and compelling manner;

Ability to think creatively and strategically;

Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, team environment with tight deadlines;

Proficient in Google Office and Microsoft Office Suite programs – familiarity with MailChimp and Salesforce a plus;

Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university required;
