Director of Policy & Government Affairs
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: The mission of The Denver Foundation is to inspire people and mobilize resources to strengthen our community. As Colorado’s oldest and largest community foundation, we’ve been taking care of the future since 1925. We help generous people create charitable legacies and give back to the community through Community Grants, The Denver Foundation supports community groups and nonprofit organizations in the seven-county Metro Denver area with an ongoing commitment to reducing disparities and promoting equity for the most vulnerable members of our community. The Denver Foundation’s Impact Group is responsible for delivering exceptional outcomes to drive the Foundation’s community leadership. The group is responsible for managing all aspects of the Foundation’s revenue development, donors stewardship, grantmaking, and leadership activities around public policy, evaluation and learning, and philanthropic leadership and engagement. The Impact Group is dedicated to leveraging philanthropy and generosity to help create a more racially equitable community, in which all residents have the opportunity for a high quality of life and a voice in their futures.
Building upon ninety years of experience in community investment, the Director of Policy & Government Affairs will lead the policy and advocacy at the Foundation. The position translates a vision for social change into a highly engaged policy and advocacy framework. The position requires proven skills in policy, advocacy, and strategic partnerships. The Director will draw on both equity-centered change efforts and constituent led efforts. This position must have a proven history of managing a complex portfolio addressing social systems with a focus on equity. Finally, this position provides leadership as a technical resource to leadership and team on advocacy, public communications, and influence. The Director must support and help actualize the Foundation’s core values of inclusiveness, racial equity, and resident and constituent leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Drive operational excellence in the evaluation activities of the Foundation
· Work in an integrated, collaborative fashion with all areas and Foundation departments to optimize processes and outcomes
· Contribute to building and sustaining positive departmental culture that supports commitment to team goals and core values, and that fosters positivity, humility, and accountability
Policy, Advocacy, and Community Leadership (80%)
· Create and direct all activities of the Foundation’s Policy & Government Affairs strategy.
· Work in partnership with Community Impact teams to achieve issue-specific policy and community engagement goals that advance the Foundation’s strategies
· Develop and manage state, constituent, and donor partnerships focused on the role of philanthropy in the creating greater equity through policy, advocacy, and broad-based engagement
· Supervise and work in direct partnership with the Strengthening Neighborhoods Officer focused on developing and executing clear and measurable advocacy strategies that support the Foundation’s goals
· Co-create, manage, implement and evaluate advocacy and communications plans to support the foundation’s programmatic goals
· Relationship manager for advocacy-related grant portfolio across the Community Impact department
· Continuously refine goals and strategies in conjunction with relevant stakeholders for various grant programs, donor initiatives, and the Foundation’s strategic framework
· Contribute to development of national and state grant proposals
· Contribute stories and editorial content about evaluation activities and outcomes for use in Foundation publications
· Provide technical assistance and capacity building to staff and constituents
· Represent the foundation to key external constituencies, as appropriate, on committees related to area of expertise and responsibilities of the position
· At least seven years of proven success in experience supporting teams, organizations and/or initiatives in data- and impact-driven, social-sector environments such as community-based organizations; government agencies; consultancies; or philanthropic organizations
· Demonstrated success in leading advocacy efforts that resulted in real and measurable change
· Proven ability to lead and foster collaboration to influence others in a constructive manner
· Demonstrated ability to work in and as part of community and facilitate community engagement and participatory learning
· Demonstrated experience in evaluation of programs
· Excellent judgment and decision-making while balancing competing priorities
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
· Excellent written skills including correspondence, reporting, and editing
· Ability to build relationships with people of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and cultures
· An unwavering commitment to racial equity
· Belief in the model of community foundations
· Commitment to the philosophy of the Impact Group, bringing together all philanthropy at the Foundation
· Proven success leading community-based policy and advocacy programming strategies
· Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of approaches to addressing complex social issues
· Knowledge of Metro Denver including community-specific issues and needs
· Experience working directly with residents and constituents
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position is based in an office environment with a mix of private offices and cubicles.

· Occasional activities occurring outdoors
