Position Summary:

The incumbent is a crucial link between MBA and a variety of external audiences, developing and executing innovative communications campaigns to engage MBA members, the news media, thought leaders and other stakeholders.  Using a wide variety of tools and strategies enhances MBA’s position as the single most effective, credible voice for the entire real estate finance industry.  Expected to work with minimal supervision and to set time and workload priorities independently while ensuring deadlines are met.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serves as an MBA spokesperson and briefs financial, political and trade reporters on and off the record on the wide variety of issues facing the real estate finance industry.
  2. Develops creative and highly-effective strategies for multifaceted public affairs campaigns and public affairs initiatives to advance visibility of MBA, its executives, its policy and legislative initiatives, conferences, education, research and other products and services.
  3. Executes against campaign plans using traditional and non-traditional public affairs vehicles, including (but not limited to) proactive pitching of MBA spokespeople, press releases, and public events and social media outlets
  4. Routinely develops new story ideas, regarding key issue areas, and successfully pitches and places them within the national and trade media.
  5. Routinely pitches and secures  cable television appearances as appropriate for MBA experts.
  6. Develops key strategic initiatives for MBA’s overall organizational public affairs plan.
  7. Develops and maintains critical relationships with members of the trade, national and local news broadcast, print and online media to ensure MBA is positioned as a credible, reliable source of information and insight on issues affecting the residential, multifamily and commercial real estate markets.
  8. Attends MBA conferences and industry events to coordinate on-site media and generate and manage broadcast, print and online coverage of MBA executives and volunteer leadership.
  9. Helps implement and advance MBA’s social media presence (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook) to promote MBA’s thought leadership on the issues of importance to MBA and its members.

Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or Journalism major required. Relevant experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis.  Minimum seven (7) years of experience at public relations firm, trade association, corporate setting, or on Capitol Hill/campaigns.  Excellent organizational, writing, oral communications, video, and interpersonal skills a must.  Knowledge of real estate finance and financial services issues, as well as legislative and regulatory process is strongly preferred.  Ability to thrive well under pressure, handle multiple assignments simultaneously, and manage own priorities a definite requirement.  Must be able to work well as part of team but also carry out projects independently.  Some travel required.
