Who we are looking for:


ASCO is in search of an exceptional Director of Public Affairs and Advocacy Communications. The Director of Public Affairs and Advocacy Communications is strategically and operationally responsible for the Society’s communications on policy-related and quality of cancer care issues, the Association’s advocacy communications, and the staff/vendors who support those programs. This individual directs a staff, serves as a Strategist, and directs all marketing and communications support for ASCO’s Policy and Advocacy Department, consisting of several major divisions: federal and state affairs, Congressional affairs, health policy, regulatory affairs, guidelines and measure development. This individual also serves as the Strategist and directs all marketing and communications support for ASCO’s Care Delivery Department, which encompasses all of ASCO’s Practice Support initiatives as well as the Society’s domestic and international Quality improvement programs. The Director is also the Strategist responsible for comprehensive integrated support for ASCO’s enterprise-wide, external-facing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives which reside across multiple ASCO departments.

 What you will do:

  • Provide operational direction for ASCO’s public affairs work on cancer-related legislative, regulatory, and health policy issues with the goal of positioning ASCO as the preeminent public voice on cancer policy and influencing key health policy issues
  • Develop and implement internal and external advocacy communications strategies around complex, high-profile public policy issues and direct communications support for ASCO’s legislative, regulatory, research policy, health services, practice management and care delivery programs
  • Direct MarCom support for ASCO’s external facing EDI initiatives across all departments to coordinate messaging, channels, and timing on this cross-cutting strategic organizational priority
  • Provide strategic management to ensure policy communications are integrated and coordinated cross-divisionally within the department, cross-departmentally across ASCO, and cross-entity between the American Society for Clinical Oncology and the Association for Clinical Oncology, an ASCO affiliate organization
  • Direct ASCO’s public affairs and advocacy communications programs including budgeting and managing resources, developing timelines, establishing and implementing appropriate policies/processes/procedures, establishing priorities for the public affairs team, coordinating information and communication up/down/across, and managing coordination/integration with ASCO’s PR firm and Advocacy Communications firm
  • Manage staff by providing direction and guidance, setting priorities, delegating appropriately, communicating effectively, facilitating knowledge sharing, setting goals and objectives, and coaching/mentoring


What you will need in order to be successful:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field
  • 12+ years in public affairs, journalism or public relations related to healthcare and public policy
  • 6+ years of supervisory experience
  • Proven experience in project management and strategic planning
  • Experience with partner relations and building coalitions for advocacy and communications
  • Previous experience in curation and management of digital channels, including blogs, social media platforms, and other online media
  • Demonstrated experience in the field of health policy communications
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and editing; demonstrated experience or skills in formal communications efforts
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure
  • Strong leadership and managerial/supervisory skills with the ability to delegate, motivate and develop staff
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • The ability to determine goals and priorities and to assess the steps, time and resources needed to achieve those goals
  • An ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and concurrently and think through complexity and ambiguity, make thoughtful, timely and meaningful decisions, and take corresponding actions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, approachable, strong listening and synthesis skills, ability to maintain composure in a range of situations, and act with high degree of integrity and trust


Ideal candidates will also contribute:

  • Advanced degree and/or training in public health a significant plus
  • Professional certificate such as an APR from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)
