The Director, Public Affairs and CSR, is part the global communications team and is responsible for directing Subway’s public affairs strategy as well as CSR initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Director, Corporate Communications, the role works across key functions and actively collaborates with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders. The individual is both a team player and self-starter and can both develop and execute plans.

Essential Functions

  • Develop corporate positioning and advocacy strategies to meet Subway’s public policy and business objectives
  • Build and execute strategies to foster and leverage relationships with consultants, academics, trade organizations, NGO’s and suppliers to drive program implementation, advocacy and stakeholder engagement
  • Direct Federal and State legislative and regulatory activities critical to Subway’s global business operations, reputation and performance
  • Monitor and track proposed legislation, analyze potential impact on company operations, and develop recommendations on company position
  • Establish, prioritize and align company leadership to CSR goals and drive progress against stated CSR commitments through a multi-year, aspirational Sustainability & CSR strategy
  • Work with global teams on implementation of CSR strategy
  • Report sustainability progress and updates to internal stakeholders and provide strategic recommendations as needed
  • Develop appropriate communications to educate and engage with franchisees, consumers, employees, key opinion leaders, government, media and other stakeholders on Subway public affairs and CSR initiatives
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders on positioning and strategies
  • Work with and/or lead external consultants and agencies, as needed
  • Work independently and as part of a team


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in public affairs and sustainability, either in-house or at an agency
  • Experience with a wide range of small business-related issues, such as labor, taxes and agriculture, around the world
  • Experience developing and implementing comprehensive plans for an organization, brand or program working with cross-functional teams across regions
  • Experience leading CSR and Sustainability initiatives
  • Strong curiosity, learning capacity and independent decision-making
  • Excellent written, visual and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter and effective problem solver with strong analytic skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior leadership teams
  • Ability to identify and analyze business and audience needs to deliver messages across a variety of channels
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with multiple and changing priorities, while maintaining a strong focus on execution and results
  • Ability to effectively manage complex, sensitive and confidential matters
  • Franchised- or QSR-experience is a plus
