The Director of Public & Government Affairs will create and drive PuppySpot’s government relations strategy at state and federal levels. This role will lead the charge on creating specific strategies that align with PuppySpot’s overall government affairs, advocacy and public relations plans and drive company growth. In this exciting opportunity you will be the face and voice of PuppySpot among state and federal government authorities.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive federal, state and local level government relations strategic plans
  • Establish new and strengthen existing legislative and political association relationships
  • Analyze positions of government and industry officials to determine key players on assigned legislative issues; engage with elected officials to discuss related public policy and legislation
  • Partner with and manage external lobbying teams across multiple states and municipalities to lead advocacy efforts
  • Leverage and manage industry association relationships to advocate public policy issues to protect and benefit dogs, breeders and customers
  • Monitor and review legislation and regulations; analyze state legislative and policy proposals and make recommendations to key internal stakeholders on PuppySpot advocacy approach
  • Proactively collaborate across the organization with internal teams and lead efforts to identify any public policy concerns and opportunities that will impact internal policies or will need potential advocacy efforts
  • Act as main point of contact for regulators, associations, community organizations and elected officials on behalf of PuppySpot
  • In partnership with the leadership team, develop and implement external communication strategy
  • Establish and manage media strategy and relationships; enhance PuppySpot’s external communications across multiple platforms
  • Lead external communication initiatives that support company strategic messages and build brand awareness
  • Attend and represent PuppySpot at conferences, external meetings, special events, public hearings, and industry events
  • Be a constant public ambassador of PuppySpot’s core value — Celebrate Dogs Always

 

The right candidate:

  • 5-10 years as an effective lobbyist or experience in a government relations role
  • Experience representing company interests to federal, state and local regulatory agencies
  • Extensive experience and understanding of state, federal & local public policy and legislative processes
  • Experience working with animal industry & animal welfare advocacy issues and/or related issues
  • Ability to accurately identify, analyze, and communicate legislative and policy issues
  • Ability to identify and build strategic relationships with key policy makers, industry and community leaders and other stakeholders
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills
  • Outcome oriented, creative thinker with an entrepreneurial attitude
  • Positive, compassionate, and empathetic
  • Strong proponent of sourcing of pets through responsible breeders, shelters and rescues and always at the highest standards of animal welfare
