Director of Public Policy
The Alliance is seeking an experienced public policy professional to serve as the Director of Public Policy. The position will lead the Public Policy department and oversee the development and execution of the organization’s policy agenda. The Director will work with Congress, federal agencies, the Administration, coalition partners, and external stakeholders to advance policies that improve the health and well-being of older adults. The Alliance is a highly collaborative organization and the Director of Public Policy will work closely with other internal departments. The position reports directly to the Alliance President and CEO and manages one staff position, the Public Policy Manager.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Managing the Public Policy Department for the organization.
· Pursuing opportunities to engage external stakeholders and policy influencers to extend the Alliance’s reach and to advance its policy priorities by continuing to position the Alliance as a leading voice on aging research policy.
· Cultivating and maintaining strategic relationships among key policymakers and government leaders.
· Producing written content including whitepapers, public comments, statements, reports, and content for advocacy efforts and the communications team to use in press releases, newsletters, and more.
· Providing strategic counsel to the President and CEO on policy and legislative issues.
· Serving as a spokesperson for the Alliance to major stakeholders, including congressional and administration staff, national non-profit organizations, and industry partners.
· Serving as a lobbyist for the Alliance, which requires registration as a lobbyist at the federal level.
· Overseeing coalition work on various age-related FDA and CMS regulatory issues.
· Supervising the Public Policy Manager.
· Working closely with the Director of Development to secure robust support for the organization’s policy and advocacy work.
· Collaborating with the health education and communications teams to ensure public policy elements are accurately presented.
· Managing department and project budgets.
· Leading special projects as needed.
· Willingness to travel 15 – 25% of the time.

· Advanced degree in law, public policy, public health, or another relevant field preferred.
· 6-8 years of relevant policy experience, preferably for a patient advocacy or voluntary health organization, on Capitol Hill, in a corporate government affairs office, with a lobbying firm, or within a trade association.
· At least 1 year of supervising one or more staff (not just interns), and at least 2 years of coalition/policy project management experience.
· Robust knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory processes.
· Established experience working on CMS and/or FDA regulatory issues.
· Record of successful relationship building with elected officials and their staff, agency staff, and third-party stakeholders.
· Demonstrated persuasive advocacy and communications skills and excellent judgment.
· Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners to achieve results.
· Proven managerial skills with the ability to motivate and lead direct-report and cross-functional teams to success and superior results.
· Creativity, enthusiasm, and willingness to be hands-on.
· Strong problem solving and negotiating skills.
· Flexibility and openness to new ideas and new approaches.
· Ability to balance multiple competing priorities and balance allocation of time between efforts.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
· Authorized to work in the United States.
· Commitment to serving the public interest and passion for health policy and aging preferred.
