Job Description

The Director, Public Policy and Alliance Development at Vertex Pharmaceuticals reports to the Senior Director, Public Policy and Alliance Development and will lead the strategy and execution of public policy and alliance development activities for Vertex’ pain pipeline area. This role will work within Public Affairs as well as cross-functionally with other internal Vertex functions, including commercial, medical, R&D and legal, to ensure alignment and progress around our corporate goals and objectives.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a Public Affairs strategy and tactical plan for Vertex’ pain pipeline area.
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional team, including federal and state government affairs colleagues, to support execution of the strategic and tactical plan and identify opportunities for engagement with external partners.
  • Establish and manage relationships with national groups to achieve Vertex goals, bring value to patients, and enhance the Company’s standing and reputation. Ensure compliant and transparent stakeholder engagement.
  • Represent the PA function on internal teams (e.g., brand teams), to identify and manage product and therapeutic area issues relevant to Public Affairs, and to provide strategic counsel to functional leaders, brand teams and government affairs
  • Lead analysis of the external policy environment and anticipate trends specific to brand teams, advising brands on emerging and existing healthcare policies and trends, how they affect the operating environment, and identifying opportunities and challenges
  • Mitigate areas of risk by monitoring key issues and trends, develop strategies to protect and enhance company reputation
  • Identify additional opportunities to advance our company’s business objectives
  • Fulfill other duties/projects, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years current and relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry and 5-7 years prior experience in patient advocacy, public health policy, government relations or related field(s), preferably with experience in the pain environment;
  • Bachelor’s degree required. An advanced degree is highly desired
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated outstanding strategic planning, communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to travel up to 35%;
  • Pharmaceutical, governmental, or non-profit sector, and therapeutic area experience;
  • Experience in patient advocacy, government affairs, managed markets or public policy
  • A high level of energy and passion toward patients, science and public health;
  • Working knowledge and appreciation of the complexities of the drug development process and regulatory requirements;
  • Proven teamwork and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to interact and influence all levels of business;
  • Detail-oriented, self-initiating, well-organized and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously;
