Position Overview

The Director of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs is responsible for proactive and productive engagement with federal regulatory agencies, close engagement with member company representatives, open and active engagement with teammates, and effective communication, internally and externally, about TFI’s regulatory priorities. 

The Director is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of effective regulatory policy strategies and tactics. This person will have a proven track record of working on environmental, agriculture, and occupational regulations/policies and will build and maintain relationships with key staff at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other relevant agencies.

The key to success in this position is a willingness and want to be a tireless advocate on behalf of the fertilizer industry.  The effective candidate will proactively seek opportunities to ensure that the business needs of the entire fertilizer supply chain are considered when decisions are made by federal agencies.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Lead strategy and policy development in areas of responsibility. 
  2. Manage policy committee(s) as assigned.  
  3. Manage outside counsel and contractors on various issues.  
  4. Develop and adhere to a budget.
  5. Develop and maintain relationships with key federal regulators. 
  6. Actively monitor the Federal Register
  7. Write technical comments on issue areas as assigned. 
  8. Develop and maintain relationships with like-minded associations and coalitions.  
  9. Communicate and collaborate with other fertilizer industry groups.
  10. Develop literature reviews and other components in support of TFI projects. 
  11. Work with TFI’s public affairs team to write and regularly update advocacy materials.
  12. Field member requests for industry information.



  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, public policy or agriculture is required. A law degree in environmental science is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years successfully advocating a constituency’s needs to regulators.  
  • Familiarity with Clean Air Act and OSHA regulations is preferred.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills and a service-oriented mindset.  
  • Evidence of strong writing acumen is a must.  
  • Ability to build effective relationships within a team/collaborative environment, with a high level of professionalism
  • Limited Travel
