Director of Research and Community Engagement
United States of Care is seeking an experienced professional to join its growing team.
The mission of United States of Care is to ensure that every single American has access
to quality, affordable health care regardless of health status, social need, or income. As a
newly formed non-partisan non-profit, we are building and mobilizing a movement to
achieve long-lasting solutions that make health care better for everyone. United States
of Care will help make it happen by working with Americans from across the country:
patients and caregivers, advocates, physicians and other clinicians, policymakers, and
business, civic, and religious leaders.
Position Description
The Director of Research and Community Engagement leads United States of Care’s
mission to expand health care access to all Americans by understanding people’s shared
and diverse experiences, priorities, and values related to health care access in the US
and translate findings towards effective policy solutions. As the head of our listening
and research efforts, the Director will have the unique opportunity to design, build, and
grow a partnership-based listening model and research methodology. The Director will
guide qualitative and quantitative research, build relationships and manage
partnerships with diverse community members and organizations, synthesize findings
into actionable insights, and collaborate with leaders across the organization to inform
campaign activities, advocacy messaging, and policy solutions.
A successful Director will employ community-based research and analysis skills, an
understanding of the US health care system including how that differs across
communities, and familiarity with partner organizations to advance US of Care’s
mission. Integral to this role is an awareness of health disparities and inequities within
the US and a determination to develop creative and appropriate solutions to gather
insight into the differences in health care experiences, priorities, and values that exist
within and between groups.
Responsibilities and Duties
Research Approach, Design, and Implementation
● Develop and execute a research approach to authentically understand people’s
health care needs, experiences, and priorities using best practices;
● Apply an equity lens throughout research design and implementation;
● Build and maintain an effective and efficient infrastructure to support
people-centered research and listening activities with actionable findings and
○ Plan and facilitate qualitative and quantitative research, including
community listening sessions to collect qualitative data;
○ Analyze research findings, develop reports, and package and present data
for use across the organization;
○ Effectively communicate qualitative and quantitative data to inform
campaign activities or a policy agenda;
○ Collaborate with other leaders across the organization to ensure the
research methodology and work products are aligned with the
organization’s need;
● Cultivate relationships and manage partnerships with organizations working in
the health care research landscape;
● Manage and maintain coalitions (like the Voices of Real Life), as necessary;
● Partner closely with the Director of Media and Communications to elevate
findings among critical audiences;
● Develop and contribute toward funding proposals by creating and managing
fundable projects, as well as providing insights based on research to proposals.
Community Partner Relationship Building and Management
● Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community members,
community-based organizations, and national and local organizations seeking to
understand the health care experiences and needs of people in the US;
● Seek opportunities to share and receive information with organizations with
similar missions;
● Represent US of Care at community-based listening sessions and
community-based events.
Strategy, Team Building, and Management
● Set vision for and manage several large projects at once and prioritize work for
Listening and Research team;
● Collaborate closely with other departments, including attending
inter-departmental meetings, understanding goals/objectives, managing issues
proactively, and responding to requests promptly;
● Establish and manage team budget;
● Build and manage a diverse team, as resources are available;
● Facilitate staff development by providing growth opportunities and support;
● Regularly train, coach, evaluate, and recognize staff performance and
● Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree in public health, statistics, or related
field preferred;
● 8-10 years of experience at increasing levels of responsibility and leadership on a
research team in the health care, non-profit community based organizations, or
community engagement fields;
● Experience building and managing relationships with community members,
non-profit community-based organizations, and other mission-driven national
organizations including those from underrepresented communities;
● Demonstrated awareness of privilege and structural racism’s impact on health
● Experience applying an equity lens to designing and leading community-based
research efforts;
● Demonstrated ability to communicate research findings effectively;
● Experience supporting policy development through research is preferred;
● Demonstrated ability to develop, manage, and collaborate with a diverse team of
● Strategic, organized, detail-oriented self-starter with the flexibility to take on
tasks outside of role and ability to embrace ambiguity;
● Excellent communication and writing skills;
● Willingness to respect different points of view and balance innovation and
creativity with action and results;

Compensation and Location
United States of Care offers a very generous benefits package including medical, dental
and vision insurance; 403b with match and paid time off. This position is full-time with
location in Washington, D.C. or Minneapolis, MN preferred but not required. The salary
range for this position is $95,000 to $125,000 depending on experience and location.
