Position: Director, State Government Affairs

Supervisor: Vice President, State Government Affairs

Status: Full Time

FLSA: Exempt

Location: Washington, DC or In-Region[AB1] * (South/Southeast)

Department: State Affairs

 

Reporting to the Vice President of State Government Affairs, the Director, State Government Affairs assists in the development of Auto Innovators’ positions and engagement strategies on state policies impacting the automotive industry. The position will be responsible for educating and engaging with members, allies, stakeholders, state policymakers and an in-state lobbyist network in each respective state in the Director’s region. The position will also be responsible for assisting in the management of special events and projects to advance both the industry and the association’s interests and policy positions throughout the year. The Director will work closely and regularly with other departments within the association to successfully advocate in the states on a wide range of issues impacting the auto industry.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Monitors, evaluates, engages and apprises the Auto Innovators’ leadership, staff, and members of trends in state policy that impact the industry

· Ability to travel extensively, occasionally on short notice, to attend in-person meetings, hearings or events

· Collaborates with staff and members to prepare comments, correspondence, and deliver hearing testimony as needed

· Provides substantive input to Auto Innovators’ team regarding draft policies and external messaging

· Communicates information on Auto Innovators’ policy priorities to state legislative and regulatory bodies

· Consults regularly with member companies on policy priorities, issue positioning, appropriate messaging, and legislative engagement strategy and tactics

· Identifies, develops and maintains relationships with lawmakers, stakeholders and other relevant organizations

· Serves as a thought leader on state policies impacting the industry in panel discussions and in other public forums

· Represents Auto Innovators in strategic partnership efforts and other public venues advocating adoption of recommended policies and initiatives

· Recruits and grows coalition members and influence

· Works closely with other Auto Innovators’ departments to ensure a coherent, coordinated industry effort and proper messaging on issues is achieved

· Collaborates and manages relationships with outside counsel and consultants

· All other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

· Solid knowledge of state legislative and regulatory processes and the nuances among the various states

· Expertise in working in a team environment requiring sustained collaboration and communication with colleagues

· Comprehensive understanding of automotive industry and trends, including various stakeholder groups

· Ability to interpret complex policy concepts and effectively communicate them to senior leadership, government officials, and external stakeholders

· Ability to interpret legislation and regulations and decipher the potential impact on the industry

· Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities to generate confidence and maintain consensus among Auto Innovators’ members

· Excellent oral and written communications skills, ability to speak/represent the Auto Innovators before government officials, member company executives, and the media

· Ability to identify and anticipate emerging state policy issues that may impact the industry

· Bias for action with a demonstrated track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output

· Ability to make decisions and achieve results in a changing environment

· Passion for Auto Innovators’ mission and love for the auto industry

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

· Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degree preferred

· Minimum of five years of experience working in state policy development, direct

state legislative work a plus

· Familiarity with the auto industry and the key issues impacting it

· Ability to travel up to 50% of the time
