Functional Accountabilities
Leadership & Management
- Work effectively as a member of an integrated management team led by the VP, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. This team encompasses Strategic Communications, Marketing, Provider Relations and Digital Strategy, Collectively, this team leads development and execution of strategically-focused plan(s) that engage and activate stakeholders and promote and protect the reputation, brand and success of the organization.
- Participate in ongoing improvement of the department’s performance metrics and analytics dashboards, developing relevant systems for measuring success across all of the areas supervised.
- Develop and manage annual budget for the relevant division.
- Ensure strong project management across all areas supervised with a focus on organizational goals.
- Observe and ensure team adherence to all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
- Provide sound strategic counsel to–and share expert knowledge with–leaders and managers across the organization.
- Facilitate and require system-wide adherence to organizational brand standards and communication, marketing and digital channel policies and procedures as authorized within the role.
- Continuously strengthen the systems of collaboration with other departments and entities that have interfacing responsibilities as well as those seeking services or consultation.
- Ensure the successful recruitment, hire, training, development and direction of staff to work as effective teams, supporting a culture of ongoing professional growth and strengthening retention.
- Provide timely coaching and performance feedback to those directly supervised, and ensure effective management of the teams overseen.
- Identify when the use of external agencies and consultants is needed, and oversee the work of these agencies
Planning
- Develop and implement comprehensive and strategically-sound communication programs that support goals including elevating the organization’s reputation locally, nationally and internationally, driving advocacy and support, creating an engaged and inspired workforce and advancing strategic priorities.
Public Relations/Media Relations
- Oversee the development of high-impact, well-executed written and visual content across materials for which the supervised teams have responsibility, including but not limited to print and electronic publications, speeches, news releases, web content, social posts, opinion pieces, videos, photos, and podcasts.
- Ensure clear organizational processes for vetting sensitive topical positions and planning major new announcements
- Continuously enhance systems for early identification of issues and rapid response to crises. Develop strategically-sound crisis communication/issues management strategies including both proactive and responsive efforts.
- Develop strategies to position Children’s National across all earned channels as the go-to expert in children’s health care among patients/families, relevant local and national influencers, journalists, referring providers, government officials, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
- Track trending content across relevant channels to identify opportunities for Children’s National to contribute to high-visibility conversations where it has expertise.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the organization.
- Develop messaging and provide professional counsel and coaching to the appropriate leaders/subject matter experts for high-impact media opportunities. As needed, staff subject matter experts for interviews.
- Ensure robust social listening programs and service recovery processes.
Executive Communications
- Manage staff to support the ongoing positioning of the CEO as a thought leader on issues affecting the health of children through multi-channel communications strategies.
- With tactical assistance from assigned staff, oversee the development of goal-driven communication materials for use by the CEO, including formal speeches, talking points, presentations, correspondence, statements of opinion, public letters, columns and other documents.
- Provide professional counsel and strategic support to members of the executive leadership team to further their effectiveness as representatives of the organization and thought leaders within their areas of expertise.
- As needed and appropriate, staff the CEO and other executives during speaking engagements and provide feedback and coaching.
Internal Communications
- Ensure a proactive internal communications program, inclusive of routine communications channels, that unites a diverse workforce in support of the organization’s mission, vision and values and which motivates employees and faculty to be effective ambassadors for the organization.
- Use effective strategies for supporting the reputation of Children’s National as a great place to work.
- Manage the organizational intranet, continuously improving engagement.
- Ensure a nimble and effective issues response system specific to internal communications needs, including effectively addressing issues of concern that affect or are raised by identifiable groups of employees.
- Continuously identify and implement new approaches and technologies to support engagement of all internal audiences.
