Director, Strategic Communications and Media Relations
The American Academy of PAs (AAPA) is the national professional society for PAs (physician assistants). PAs are medical providers who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. About this role:
The Director, Strategic Communications & Media Relations is one of two director-level positions reporting to the Vice President of Communications. They will be an enthusiastic self-starter, who enjoys working with people and thrives in a fast-paced environment. The Director of Strategic Communications & Media Relations should have the ability to analyze and synthesize complex information, distilling it into more easily-understandable formats.
This position is responsible for providing AAPA state chapters with strategic communications support and counsel to advance legislative priorities. Guidance includes but is not limited to, media relations, social media, and advertising. Additionally, they respond to daily media inquiries while proactively identifying and leveraging opportunities to gain visibility for AAPA and for the PA profession with national, trade and local media. They also prepare briefing materials for the President and the CEO of AAPA, or other leaders taking part in media interviews on behalf of the organization.
- Advanced degree, professional affiliations or other relevant formal training are a plus.
- At least 5-7 years of experience in a communications-related field.
- Experience in public health or healthcare field a plus.
- Experience advising top executives.
- Demonstrated experience working with national media.
