By working closely with the US government and coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, our Corporate and Government Affairs team represents United on public policy and legislative issues. And our Environmental Affairs team is equally working hard to shape an environmentally sustainable future. Together these teams advocate for a cleaner, safer, and more optimistic future for our airline, our employees, and the millions of customers we serve all around the globe.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for owning the development and implementation of environmental sustainability strategies as part of United’s overall global commitment to zero out greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 without relying on traditional carbon offsets. Lead a team of sustainability professionals to implement programs and initiatives focused on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, technology and solution investments, commercial and customer engagements, corporate ESG reporting, and overall corporate responsibility related to environmental impact. Engage in a cross-functional leadership team refining United’s ESG strategy overall with an emphasis on the environmental contribution. Collaborate with key senior-level internal and external leaders to shape the success of United’s environmental ambition and progress. Help define strategic priorities and develop implementation plans against defined objectives and metrics. Support other duties as assigned.

Environmental, Social & Corporate Governance (ESG) Climate Strategy:

  • Lead the Environmental team’s collaboration across key internal partners to define and implement United’s ESG climate strategy, including voluntary and mandatory disclosure reporting, governance collaboration, creation, and management, performance tracking, communication and more
  • Facilitate execution of the ESG climate strategy in collaboration with United leadership, business units, and external partners
  • Define and implement United’s approach to GHG data collection, analysis, assurance, reporting, publication, including greenhouse gas accounting, tracking, and reporting; sample frameworks include Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), EU Emissions Trading System and more
  • Engage with external partners, such as investors, as appropriate

Climate Solution Portfolio:

  • Manage a team that supports United’s decarbonization initiatives including investments, commercial (B2B) and customer (B2C) initiatives, sustainable aviation fuel activities, policy advocacy and more in support of United’s 100% green commitment
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge and understanding of the environmental impact of United’s initiatives to inform real time and forecasted emissions targets and corporate travel programs
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, market trends, new technology and other decarbonization impacts. The team’s portfolio includes projects including sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen and electric powered aircraft, customer programs for business travel and cargo, digital education and engagement, policy advocacy and more
  • Represent United, as appropriate, with Airlines For America, International Air Transport, and other industry associations

Leadership:

  • Effectively lead teams by establishing department and individual goals
  • Be responsible for the department and individual performance and improvement plans
  • Coach, counsel and assist employees to develop individual career development and training plans
  • Lead effective teams using technical knowledge and experience to provide thoughtful decision making and guidance in strategic implementation of United’s objectives and initiatives
  • Be committed to a creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation
  • Model integrity, possess self-awareness and fosters an environment of accountability
  • Provide transparent communication to department staff, Leadership and Partners
  • Represent United’s programs and leadership at industry and other external events
  • Mentor and manage a team that is empowered and engaged in the mission of the Environmental Affairs Department

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 12 years of environmental or ESG experience
  • 5-7 years of managerial experience
  • Minimum 3 years management of ESG programs or projects such as experience with GHG protocol, CDP, TCFD, or other relevant ESG frameworks/enablers
  • Knowledge of GHG accounting methodologies
  • Experience in evaluating sophisticated business challenges and developing pragmatic solutions with a senior level multi-functional team
  • Strong business and financial acuity to evaluate potential strategies and opportunities relevant to our business
  • Experience with partner engagement with key groups including communities, government officials, NGOs, employees, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal and judgment skills to lead cross-divisional teams towards collective
  • Strong analytical skills, strategic/innovative thinking, and long-term vision
  • Ability to “scan the horizon” and apply risk/benefit approach to emerging issues
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with experience presenting to senior management and/or external audiences required
  • Proficient computer skills including WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK, and PowerPoint
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
  • This role will follow a hybrid scheduling model
  • Can be based in Washington D.C. or Chicago

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master’s degree
  • Airline or hard-to-abate industry or consulting equivalent experience
  • Experience establishing an ESG program
