Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Manager
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Manager will build and drive the programs that support and sustain the organization’s workforce diversity, inclusivity, education, and retention efforts. This role works to foster a equitable and inclusive work environment for everyone, and ensures that diversity and inclusion considerations are incorporated into the workplace.
Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Manager will have demonstrated skill in leading diversity, equity and inclusion work, and have the ability to influence equitable change and drive DEI programs and initiatives by building effective relationships throughout the organization. The DEI Manager will help identify needs and help develop strategies, trainings, initiatives and action plans, in partnership with leadership. Our DEI Manager has an awareness and understanding of the external trends and issues impacting DEI and our work.
This position will be responsible for the strategy, execution, development of metrics to assess meaningful impact in fulfillment of our commitment and ongoing journey of being an inclusive and antiracist organization. The DEI Manager brings a contemporary point of view of equity and inclusion that understands both foundational barriers to social and economic equity and new paradigms for addressing them. Focusing on a learning orientation and co-creative approach to designing and implementing strategies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Advance NWC’s Equity work plan and initiatives throughout all of NWC.
- Manage DEI Coordinator role, who helps track DEI divisional training and metrics and new hire training.
- Provide organizational support/communication/direction regarding diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Collaborate with NWC’s Equity Committee, B.A.G Affinity, PRISM groups, BIPOC Affinity Group, Disability Awareness Alliance (and others) helping to support staff accessibility and participation; meeting with Equity Committee co-chairs and Affinity/Resource group leaders on a regular cadence to ensure that the mission/strategic goals of OneNWC DEI are consistent.
- Support Equity Team/Committee conversations and needs, which may include, but not limited to facilitating meetings, support active projects, completing research, providing and presenting data or metrics, and attending meetings.
- Serve as the first point of contact and subject matter expert for employees interested in starting an Affinity/Resource group.
- Strong interpersonal awareness and skills with particular emphasis on respectfulness, supportiveness, confrontation resolution, listening, and group process/facilitation; with a keen understanding and awareness of their own identity and how it impacts and influences their role in DEI.
- Work collaboratively across NWC departments to apply an intersectional equity lens to policies, recruitment, retention, strategies, employee experience, culture, and to communicate new programs/initiatives.
- Conduct research and stay current on new DEI programs, initiatives, diversity-related issues and best practices to develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to foster the organization’s DEI goals.
- Works towards greater inclusion and equity within the organization through establishing unity, collaboration, and understanding; Having the ability to see and honor multiple perspectives and while championing equity and inclusion for all.
Metrics & Tracking
- Tracking divisional participation of DEI focused staff training aligned with established divisional goals.
- Schedule and help to support the content and facilitation of Equity Foundational and Leadership trainings, ensuring that facilitators are trained and supported, and working with facilitators to ensure that the content is up to date and consistent throughout the trainings with embedded tracking measures.
- Establish, document, and track the current landscape of DEI division participation.
- Regularly measure, analyze, and highlight areas of strength and weakness, providing consultative support to identify opportunities, interventions, and initiatives for improvement working to create tangible goals for DEI and a year-end wrap up to report to teams.
- Continuously benchmark D&I best practices to ensure effective, efficient processes and assist in positioning NWC as a recognized diversity and inclusion leader in the community.
- May serve as a facilitator for established and new NWC equity workshops and trainings.
- Work with DEI Coordinator to ensure all new hires receive a comprehensive introduction and welcome to NWC’s equity offerings including Committees, Affinity Groups and Trainings.
- Attend and represent Northwest Center at sponsored equity trainings and events
- In collaboration with the department director and larger HR team, work to identify training opportunities to educate staff and leaders in how to recognize, accommodate and appreciate individual differences and how these can be bridged back to assist in meeting organization-wide goals and priorities.
- Help to enhance DEI education efforts, supporting the development and facilitation of new workshops, training, tools and resources to drive inclusion, belonging and retention initiatives
- In collaboration with the department director, provide leadership and coaching, when appropriate, to employees and leadership via one-to-one and group interactions.
NEEDED EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources/Relations, Business Administration, Organizational Development, Communications, Multicultural Studies or equivalent experience.
- Five years professional work experience in workplace diversity, equity, inclusion & culture.
- Two years of program management experience developing, delivering, promoting, critically assessing, and continually improving DEI programs.
- Proven, progressive experience and demonstrated effectiveness, initiating and supporting Diversity and Inclusion initiatives and programs.
- Demonstrated commitment to implement program innovation and assessment.
- Experience with intersectional equity issues such as disability, language, religious, gender identity, etc.
- Experience working with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), Affinity Groups (AG) and DEI Teams is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working in and with diverse and historically underserved communities or with social impact community organizations.
- Employee Relations experience or background in organizational learning and development.
- Two years in a leadership role managing organizational DEI initiatives.
- Commitment to Northwest Center’s mission of inclusion and ability to successfully work in a diverse environment.
- Ability to practice a high level of confidentiality with strong moral and ethical judgement and conduct.
- Influence others without direct authority to achieve solutions to meet organization’s objectives, rather than personal objectives, and is proactive in providing solutions, resolving issues and overcoming hurdles to results.
- Passion to foster an inclusive and diverse culture through initiatives, training & education, communications, and implementing optimizations based on high-level goals.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to translate metrics, research, and trends into and improvement opportunities.
- Ability to act and make independent and discretionary judgment as well as the ability to work collaboratively and as part of a larger team
- Skilled facilitator and competent in leading and training work groups and facilitating high stakes / sensitive conversations on diversity awareness, racial equity, neurodiversity and related topics.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills required
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to travel to locations throughout the greater Washington region, with travel outside of the state on occasion.
- Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language
- Ability to see both distance and details at close range, within a few feet of the observer (with or without corrective lenses).
- Ability to identify and understand the speech of another person (with or without a personal auditory hearing device).
- Work could include a dog friendly environment with over 1000 dogs on campus. Individuals with dog allergies or those who do not particularly care for dogs may not be the best fit.
