Summary: The Executive Director, Public Policy oversees the LLS Office of Public Policy’s (OPP) policy research team, providing leadership and vision critical to ensuring that LLS is armed with the evidence and solutions needed to advance its policy agenda.

At present, that agenda is focused on protecting and promoting access to meaningful health insurance coverage, securing reductions in the cost burden that patients encounter when accessing cancer care, and accelerating the development and approval of new, meaningful treatment options.

The Executive Director, Public Policy will work hand-in-hand with colleagues on OPP’s leadership team, in particular those overseeing OPP’s state and federal government affairs teams.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development, maintenance, and growth of LLS’s policy portfolio, tapping stakeholders as appropriate and ensuring that the organization’s priorities are responsive to the most pressing needs of the blood cancer community
  • Oversee the design and delivery of policy research conducted or commissioned by OPP’s policy team. Includes responsibility for developing consensus across OPP regarding annual research priorities
  • Collaborate with the LLS Education & Services Department to help shape funding priorities for the LLS Equity in Access Research Grant Program and to ensure that research findings inform OPP’s policy engagement
  • Lead the production and maintenance of LLS policy collateral, ensuring that materials make robust use of available data and accurately represent LLS’s policy positions
  • Ensure that OPP’s government affairs teams receive timely and thorough policy analysis and materials review, as needed to support day-to-day lobbying and legal advocacy efforts
  • Deliver executive-level memos, briefings, and/or other resources needed to keep LLS leadership apprised of policy issues and trends, in response to requests and proactively as well
  • Design and oversee regular delivery of policy education for OPP staff, to ensure that all members of the department are positioned to promote LLS’s point of view on key issues
  • Support the education of LLS advocates, working closely with counterparts in grassroots advocacy to identify area of need and to execute trainings
  • Oversee management of OPP’s policy consultants, ensuring that their expertise is fully utilized and that deliverables are timely and of high-quality
  • Grow LLS’s visibility in the policy arena by representing the organization in relevant speaking venues and by developing alliances with other stakeholder organizations in health care policy
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the LLS mission and programs to promote the field and campaign fundraising initiatives

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of study. Advanced degree strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience working in health care policy. An advanced degree may partially satisfy this requirement
  • Experience successfully leading a team of direct reports
  • Experience managing multiple consultants on long- and short-term projects

Position Requirements:

  • Sophisticated understanding of the policy debates dominating health care today
  • Ability to project trends in the policy sector and forecast potential mission impact
  • Robust communication skills in both verbal and written formats
  • Strong understanding of the current political environment and of policy-making processes at the state and federal level, including both legislative and regulatory processes
  • Ability to work collaboratively and achieve consensus across a matrixed environment

  • Will require regular travel to OPP’s office in Washington, DC and occasional travel to LLS’s national office in Rye Brook, NY
