Role Summary 
 
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, oversee all aspects of AIM’s government affairs activities, including legislative (state primarily – but federal as well), regulatory, ballot questions and litigation.  In collaboration with the CEO, develop AIM’s positions and strategy on a diverse array of business-related issues and execute successful prosecution of those strategies. 
 
Develop long and short-term goals and objectives for Government Affairs that support the strategic plan of AIM in a meaningful and sustained way.  Actively engage in the critical long-term goal of representing the diverse demographics of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts employer community. 
In conjunction with the CEO, ensure that AIM is an effective, non-partisan and respected voice of employers with public policy leaders, primarily on Beacon Hill, but also in Washington D.C. when appropriate. 
 
Lead Government Affairs staff of four and three outside contract lobbyists to accomplish the above.  Recruit and retain talent, manage performance, compensation and the development of departmental objectives. 
 
Participate personally or assist in the communication of all Government Affairs efforts with the AIM Board of Directors, members, prospects, government officials, and the media. The nature of this communication is often two-way, soliciting critical information from the business community to help shape AIM’s positions and strategy. 
 
Create, lead or support business and organization alliances that advance the public policy agenda of Massachusetts employers. 
 
Collaborate with all other AIM departments to accomplish not only Government Affairs goals and objectives, but AIM-wide goals and objectives; especially those related to communications, education, and membership retention and recruitment. 
 
Oversee the development and efficient management of the department’s annual budget. 
 
Candidate Profile 
 
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. 
 
Minimum of 10 years of directly related experience with deep expertise in public policy development and advocacy.  Extensive experience working effectively and collaboratively with the Massachusetts legislative and executive branches. Possesses a thorough knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process. 
 
Must have prior leadership experience managing a department of employees.
 
Possesses unquestioned integrity in his/her approach to making decisions
 
Naturally connects and builds strong relationships with others, demonstrating strong emotional intelligence and an ability to communicate clearly, persuasively, and diplomatically.  Advanced verbal, written and presentation abilities. 
 
Demonstrated ability to develop cooperative and effective relationships with members of the business community, the media, and other strategic partners. 
 
Demonstrated track record of recruiting, developing and motivating top talent, celebrating diversity, delegating effectively, and managing performance. 
 
The ability to persevere in the face of challenges and exhibit a steadfast resolve and relentless commitment to winning the day on behalf of Massachusetts employers. 
 
Fluent in the use of all types of media outlets, including social media, to communicate messages to a diverse audience. 
 
Excellent research skills. 
 
Required to be or to become a registered lobbyist.
