Position Summary

This communicator supports Duke Energy’s federal affairs and strategic policy team and is responsible for managing the internal and external communications programs for the business unit. Requires in‐depth knowledge and experience.


  • Develops communications plans for complex issues
  • Works independently and receives minimal guidance
  • Prepares executive speeches and messages, key business, financial, annual reports, and communications for broad employee audiences
  • Develops/implements communications on complex issues
  • Represents the company to challenging audiences and at public meetings
  • Provides counsel to management and senior leaders on issues and for media interviews
  • Develops media strategies and relationships with key reporters/outlets
  • Responds to inaccurate/misleading information
  • Serves in a management role during crises

Basic Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree in communications, journalism, public relations, English or related field
  • Seven (7) or more years of communications or related experience

Desired Qualifications        

  • Previous experience as a congressional communications director or similar role
  • Previous energy industry experience
  • Policy communications experience
  • National media relations experience
  • Highly motivated individual who can follow through and work with minimal direction or supervision. Experience in public relations, community affairs, internal communications and/or corporate communications
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically plan communications, including objectives which are achieved through tactics and tied directly to measurable results
  • Strong experience working with the media, developing press releases and media messages, developing and maintaining relationships with reporters and conducting interviews with the media or preparing subject matter experts for media
  • Experience in crisis communications and ability to participate in crisis management response
