Frontline Communications Coordinator
The Frontline Communications Coordinator is responsible for coordinating CJA frontline member
organizations participation in communications programs aimed at increasing their digital muscle, power,
reach, and overall communications skill set. They will also work with CJA member organizations to amplify
their stories, campaigns, and victories through creative projects and traditional media platforms. They will
work in coordination with other CJA staff, Steering Committee members, working groups, Our Power
Communities, consultants, and member organizations. This position reports directly to the Communications
The Frontline Communications Coordinator will be a core part of the Communications team. They will help
develop, conceptualize, and coordinate existing and new projects that shift the narrative and support CJA
members’ communication growth and power within mainstream, digital, emerging, and alternative media.
About Climate Justice Alliance (CJA)
Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) was formed in 2013 to create a new center of gravity in the climate
movement by uniting frontline communities and organizations into a formidable force. Our translocal
organizing strategy and mobilizing capacity is building a Just Transition away from extractive systems of
production, consumption and political oppression, and towards resilient, regenerative and equitable
economies. We believe that the process of transition must place race, gender and class at the center of the
solutions equation in order to make it a truly Just Transition.
We are a unique alliance of 71 community, frontline, and environmental justice organizations; movement
networks; and support organizations at the forefront of climate change. Our members are multicultural,
intergenerational, and prioritize leadership among women, gender-oppressed, and persons of color. They
come from traditionally underrepresented constituencies, including Indigenous Peoples, African American,
Latinx, Asian Pacific Islander, and low-income white communities, often often located near toxic, polluting
industries such as oil refineries, fracking wells, coal mines, power plants, and pipelines; rails, ports, and
other major transportation corridors; landfills and incinerators; and industrial agriculture.
Coordinate Frontline Member Communications Cohort (50%)
● Work closely with the Communications Director and assist in the planning and development of
general media plans and narrative shifting public relations campaigns that will amplify the unique
voice of CJA members.
● Provide logistical coordination to and serve as a core member of the design team of a
frontline-centered cohort program (20 groups) to increase technical communications skills and
digital communications capacity and strength. Act as the liaison among the partner organizations
launching this new program.
● Help launch and coordinate the frontline cohort program, to include coordination of skills
development trainings; working with partners; and connecting frontline organizations to technical
● Liaise with communications staff and program leads at member organizations that want to
strengthen their communications skills and build power via comms tools.
● Organize and help lead communications trainings as determined by the program design.
● Support cohort members in content creation and/or connecting them with expert partners and
● Provide additional technical support as required.
Create Content through Storytelling for CJA Platforms (40%)
● Create original content to tell the stories of frontline members’ solutions to the climate crisis
through written articles, press outreach and creative avenues.
● Write compelling stories, narratives, and other communications to highlight CJA members’
positions on climate change, Just Transition and a regenerative economy.
● Reach out to media outlets and reporters as needed.
● Assist in the design, planning, tracking and implementation of CJA’s monthly newsletter and email
● Attend virtual events as needed to represent CJA within the larger climate justice ecosystem.
● Conduct interviews as needed with CJA members’ frontline leaders for diverse platforms such as
articles, newsletters, videos, etc.
● Build relationships with communications staff from CJA’s 70+ member organizations.
● Support the overall work of CJA’s communications department.
● Work with communications firms and other policy and communications consultants.
Collaborate and coordinate with CJA staff across the organization (10%)
● Active and timely response on all communications during work hours (email, phone, signal).
● Attend bi-weekly virtual staff meetings and 2-3 in-person staff retreats per year.
● Compliance with CJA remote working policies and procedures (calendaring, availability online,
administrative duties like submitting reimbursements in a timely manner, response time to
communications, receipts, etc.).
● Schedule and attend check-in calls with supervisor.
● Develop a quarterly work plan and submit quarterly reports on work progress.
Currently does not supervise other employees.
Expected hours of work
Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Daily schedule is
flexible and will be decided in consultation with the supervisor.
Significant travel may be required during organizational events and at other times. (In this time of the
COVID-19 pandemic, organizational travel policies will be adapted as necessary, prioritizing the health of
our staff and members. Currently, there will be no travel through the end of 2020. This policy will be

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
● Proven track record of strong project management and organizational skills, including attention to
detail, ability to effectively prioritize tasks with little supervision, and work independently to
accomplish assignments and projects.
● Demonstrated solution-oriented approach, high emotional intelligence, and ability to listen deeply
to, provide support to, and follow the lead of frontline, community based leaders.
● Commitment to social justice; agreement with and commitment to CJA’s mission and values.
● Excellent analytical skills – ability to translate analysis into persuasive writing and speaking skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
● Self-starter with combined 2-5 years experience (work, volunteer, and/or academic) in writing,
communications, journalism, policy, political science, and/or a related field.
● Experience working with frontline communities.
● Familiarity with mainstream media, social media, and public relations best practices and platforms
and ability to influence large numbers of people.
● Creative mind who is not afraid to present ideas and take initiative.
● Knowledge of the national landscape of climate/environmental justice and ability to think
strategically and long-term.
Position Type and Compensation
● 100% FTE, non-exempt hourly position. Annual gross pay is $60,000-$63,000 (@100%FTE).
● CJA’s generous 100% FTE benefits package includes:
