Global Policy Senior Communicator

As a policy communications representative, this position will serve as a partner and provide strategic policy communications support for Caterpillar’s global government affairs team. This includes integrated, strategic communications – including advocacy and media relations duties – for external and internal audiences focused on achieving the enterprise’s policy outcomes.

It is critical this representative can understand and anticipate internal customer needs, and develop and implement communication strategies in direct response to those needs. A firm grasp on the activities, processes and procedures of policy formation is a critical skill set for success in this role. It is expected that the role works in close collaboration with internal teams from government affairs, corporate communications and others across the Caterpillar enterprise in building and executing sound communications strategy. The position manages the completion of its own work assignments, which are then reviewed after completion.The Global Policy Communicator is part of the Corporate Media and External Affairs team, a global communications team focused on reinforcing Caterpillar’s strategy and enhancing the company’s reputation with employees and external stakeholders. This position is located in Washington, D.C.

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts in the business and government affairs teams – including state, federal, international and Political Action Committee (PAC) teams – to develop and execute on strategic communications to support Caterpillar’s global policy priorities. Elements could include developing messaging and maintaining content for internal and external communications including employee campaigns, grassroots programs, social media platforms, websites, paid advertising, earned media placements, public speaking opportunities, videos, etc.
  • Design and implement communications tactics and strategies for integrated communications on diverse public policy issues, aimed to drive outcomes ranging from stakeholder education to grassroots activation.
  • Media relations duties involve engaging with both traditional and non-traditional media outlets – local, regional and global – to advance Caterpillar’s core messaging. Duties also include pitching stories, preparing executive briefing materials, drafting press releases and statements, organizing press briefings and events, drafting and/or editing Op-eds, letters to the editor and blog posts, as well as fact checking with editors and reporters. Proactively identify issues, potential crises and good news opportunities to raise visibility of Caterpillar. Develop and implement strategies for managing them.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders to aid the work of the team, including appropriate policy makers’ and associations’ communications staff and PR agencies.
  • Contribute to metrics tracking to communicate impact of public policy communications.
  • Conduct research for relevant topics and stay current on company and industry initiatives and policy priorities.
  • Stay deeply connected to media coverage of topical issues in Caterpillar industries to advise leaders on the pulse of conversations
  • Perform other related communications duties as assigned.

 Required qualifications:

  • 10 years of experience in communications, campaign management and/or community/grassroots engagement
  • Strong writer able to persuade and educate diverse stakeholders
  • Collaborative team player
  • Ability to manage multiple campaigns simultaneously while paying close attention to tactical details (task-oriented executer)

 Requirements

  • A college or university degree in business, communications, marketing or related field. 
  • Minimum of seven years of job related experience including a variety of cross-functional experiences.
  • Public relations, media relations or previous corporate communications experience is required.
  • Prior experience working in the public policy arena, or a keen personal interest in public policy, is also required.

  • Demonstrated leadership and strong business acumen coupled with excellent   communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, good judgment and the ability to manage multiple, complex situations with people inside and outside the department and company are required.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality, strong writing skills, meet tight deadlines and manage projects or communications campaigns is required.
