POSITION:         Government Affairs Associate

REPORTS TO:    Larry Shannon, Government Affairs Director

LOCATION:        Olympia & Seattle, Washington


Washington State Association for Justice (“WSAJ”) is the largest association in the Pacific Northwest committed exclusively to protecting the civil justice system and serving the needs of plaintiff’s attorneys. With more than 2,400 members from across the state, WSAJ is a community creating and sharing resources for its members to secure justice for their clients. WSAJ provides education, litigation support, networking and information sharing opportunities, as well as government relations and amicus representation. WSAJ also maintains an affiliated political action committee that works closely with the Government Affairs team. The organization harnesses the energy of its entire membership so that each member individually can hold wrongdoers accountable and achieve justice for their clients in the courtroom, even against powerful interests.


Legislative (50%)

·        Assist legislative advocacy efforts during legislative session in Olympia to include writing, research and tracking legislation and following up with legislators at all stages of legislative progress

·        Work with legislators and staff to work amendments and other negotiations on issues moving forward

·        Attend and testify at hearings and prepare WSAJ members and their clients to testify

·        Support membership involvement and grassroots mobilization efforts in support of legislative priorities, including organizing lobby days and preparing regular communications to the membership

·        Participate and engage with allies and organizations to advance WSAJ legislative priorities


Electoral (20%)

·        Work with Government Affairs Director to develop priorities and targeting in key legislative districts and statewide elections for membership involvement

·        Organize action teams of members in key areas to fundraise and assist in PAC check deliveries

·        Draft political action communications about WSAJ’s Justice for All PAC activities to engage membership

·        Activities in all areas of legislative and electoral responsibilities requires working with and engaging WSAJ members

Working with WSAJ Members and Committees (30%)

·        Engaging membership groups and committees on legislative and political priorities

·        Working on member committees, task forces, and study groups on public affairs topics as needed

·        Helping engage on appointments with state agencies as needed


·        Knowledge and experience of the legislative process required

·        Law degree helpful and desired

·        Experience lobbying and/or working in electoral politics in Washington State desired

·        Experience working with lawyers desired

·        Strong people skills and written communications skills

·        Attention to detail, organization and strong follow through and self-direction on assignments

·        Ability to manage major projects and events under time sensitive deadlines

·        Desire to work on a close-knit team with a well-tenured staff; an ideal candidate has a great sense of humor and takes pride in his or her work


·        Salary range $75-90K

·        Considering applicants who desire to be a full-time exempt employee of WSAJ

·        During session, many evenings and some weekends. We believe in work-life balance.

·        Some travel around the state as needed
