POSITION OVERVIEW – WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Government Affairs Director will work with the Co-Executive Directors of CityHealth to increase the impact of the initiative, and to ensure the smooth functioning of the project. You will perform a crucial role on the CityHealth team by identifying policy opportunities, cultivating, and maintaining long-term relationships with local policymakers and other key stakeholders.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Your day-to-day work will include activities like:

  • Managing and overseeing the government relations efforts to include monitoring the provision of technical assistance, managing policy campaign efforts, and outreach to local policymakers.

  • Supporting the Co-Executive Directors in building, maintaining, and growing external relationships to advance policy priorities.

  • Working collaboratively with the Communications Director, Program Associate, vendors, and other team members to execute the project’s communications and outreach strategy. Such duties could include reviewing outreach emails and social media and preparing materials for the project’s website to ensure that they are timely, accurate, and relevant.

  • Researching, analyzing, and preparing policy opportunity briefs and making recommendations.

  • Tracking and reporting on municipal, state, and federal policy trends and updates and working with the Communications Director to develop tools and resources to help communicate to the project’s internal and external stakeholders.

  • Communicating effectively and consistently with the government relations team regarding ongoing legislative efforts, upcoming events, status of priorities, and other information, which affects the project’s broader goals.

  • Attending and representing the project at conferences, convenings, and other events.


WHO YOU ARE

You will be an experienced government relations specialist with a strong interest in municipal policy. You are curious, driven, flexible, highly resourceful, and interested in working on issues that center equity. You are able to think and work independently, while also collaborating as part of a team. You are committed to seeing the work through, even if that may mean working outside of routine business hours. The strongest candidate will also have public policy, political science, law, public health and/or city-specific knowledge.

  • Convener: You are strategic and enjoy identifying, securing, and managing long-term relationships with policymakers as well as strategically aligned organizations or individuals.

  • Detail-oriented: You pay keen attention to detail and accuracy in a fast-moving policy environment with national reach.

  • Resourceful: You are able to skillfully and quickly manage new or challenging situations, prioritizing conflicting needs and following through on projects to successful completion while meeting deadlines.

  • Flexibility: You are able to adapt to the changing needs and priorities of cities as well as the project.

  • Local policy or advocacy experience: You have considerable experience working with cities or localities. Advocacy experience is required.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum of five years of related experience in government relations and policymaking. An understanding of municipal policymaking is strongly preferred.

  • Exceptional writing skills. Ability to translate complex subject matter for a general audience.

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with municipal leaders and strategic partners.

  • Strong work ethic and desire to produce an exceptional product.

  • Possess strong analytical and legislative/statutory research skills.

  • Commitment to advancing racial equity.

CityHealth is housed within the de Beaumont Foundation, and the CityHealth Co-Executive Directors have primary oversight of the project’s activities. The person hired for this position will be an employee of the de Beaumont Foundation and will report to the Co-Executive Directors of CityHealth.

HOW TO APPLY

The CityHealth team is small and is deeply committed to helping all city residents thrive and achieve their optimal health.

This position is full-time and based in Bethesda, MD, just outside of Washington, D.C. Currently, the Foundation’s offices are closed indefinitely and will only open once it is deemed completely safe. New hires will not be expected to relocate or be present in the physical office until six months following the Foundation’s reopening.

We offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and a collegial work environment. The salary range for this position is $105,000 to $115,000, commensurate with experience.
