Government Affairs Manager
NYRP believes that access to nature is a fundamental human right. For over 25 years, NYRP has invested in and stewarded over 80 acres of City-owned parks and 52 community gardens throughout New York City’s five boroughs. Effectively carrying out our mission requires collaboration, synergy, and understanding of the communities we serve, and their leadership on many different levels.
We are seeking a Government Affairs Manager to cultivate an ambitious portfolio of external relationships, act as a strategic thought leader who works across different departments to advance long-term institutional goals, and secure significant government funding for the organization’s work. Required Qualifications And Skills
- Minimum three years’ professional experience in government relations and project management, ideally related to issues such as environmental justice, sustainability, urban agriculture and/or public health.
- Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree in public policy, environmental science, or similar field is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to distill complex messages into clear and cogent communications for multiple audiences.
- Commitment to creative problem solving and collaboration.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet frequent deadlines.
- Confidence managing a diverse portfolio of projects that expand the strategic reach of the organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to write and speak fluently about NYRP’s work in the social and environmental justice space.
- A deep understanding of NYC Government, both Executive and Legislative branches; Firsthand experience with the City’s legislative and budget processes and existing relationships in government is strongly preferred.
- Working proficiency of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and Raiser’s Edge preferred.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Strengthen organizational relationships with elected officials at the City, State, and Federal levels to secure funding and exposure for NYRP.
- Identify and secure City, State and Federal funding opportunities.
- Working closely with other Advancement staff, write and submit clear, compelling funding proposals. Manage contract registration and reporting for all government grants.
- Manage monthly and annual lobbying filings with NYC Clerk’s Office and NYS JCOPE.
- Serve as the main point of contact with NYRP’s lobbyist, working with them to develop weekly meeting agendas, funding strategies, outreach plans, and schedule meetings.
- Extend invitations to local elected officials for NYRP public and private events, and regularly keep elected officials and key staff apprised of programs and projects in their districts.
- Maintain a rigorous schedule of contacts with government representatives.
- Attend meetings, events and/or government hearings as needed (following all Covid-safe guidelines).
- Routinely update contact lists for internal use.
- Initiate opportunities for the Executive Director, Board of Trustees, and senior staff to interact with elected officials, and create compelling presentation materials for meetings.
- Author external communications materials to drive awareness of NYRP’s work and forge new partnerships.
- Manage project budgets, develop contracts, license agreements, and MOUs with government entities.
- Organize community meetings and maintain a system for updating stakeholders on progress.
- Work collaboratively across NYRP and especially with Advancement and Community Engagement.
NYRP is a Covid-safe workplace. We require that all employees be fully vaccinated to work at NYRP.
Starting in February 2022, this position will be a hybrid position with 1 to 2 days a week in the office and the remaining time working remotely. This position also requires in-person attendance to public and constituent meetings citywide; on occasion those occur on weeknights or weekends.
